ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – With its win at Gettysburg on Wednesday
night, the Susquehanna women's volleyball team has now won 11
of its last 13 matches and improves to 14-3 on the season.
The Crusaders defeated Gettysburg 3-1 by 25-23, 25-22, 18-25,
25-18 scores, marking the first win over the Bullets (7-8) since
2008.
Jessica Holm (Montvale, N.J./Pascack Hills) and
Erin Byrne (San Diego, Calif./Scripps Ranch) had
13 kills apiece with Byrne also adding in eight service aces,
including a stretch of four-straight aces toward the end of the
match. Sarah Paluck (Nesquehoning, Pa./Tamaqua
Area) had 14 digs and Maggie O'Hearn
(Mountville, Pa./Hempfield) racked up 34 assists, six
service aces, eight digs and four kills.
SU jumped out a 5-0 lead in the first set and led by as many as
seven (19-12) before the Bullets closed to within one (23-22). The
set ended with back-to-back kills from Holm and Bryne to hand
Susquehanna the first-set win.
The second set was a back-and-forth battle with the action tied at
nine following a Hayley Dunkel
(Pottsville, Pa./Pottsville Area) kill. It was again a
two-point game late in the set (22-20) before Bryne closed out the
win with a kill.
Gettysburg went on to take the third set to force a fourth where
the Crusaders never once trailed. They were up by five (17-12) more
than midway through the action and Dunkel came up with the
match-clinching kill for a 25-18 fourth-set win.
Susquehanna is back in action on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 27-28
at the Stevens Tech Tournament.
