BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Susquehanna field hockey team opened
Landmark Conference play on Saturday with a road game at Moravian
and unfortunately the Greyhounds came away with a 2-1 overtime
victory.
The Crusaders (6-4, 0-1) and Greyhounds (7-3, 1-0) each scored
first-half goals but neither scored again in regulation, forcing
overtime where Moravian scored just over two minutes into the
action to hand SU the loss.
The numbers were nearly even for both teams, with SU and Moravian
both taking 12 shots and six penalty corners apiece. Taylor
Secor (Stroudsburg, Pa./Stroudsburg) scored on her only
shot of the game while Brodie Ercole (Oakmont,
Pa./Lewisburg Area) and Katherine Millett (Auburn,
Maine/North Yarmouth Academy) had three shots each to lead
the team.
Secor got the scoring started with a goal inside the two-minute
mark of the first half. It appeared the Crusaders were about to
head into halftime with a 1-0 lead but Moravian's Chelsea
Grotyohann scored on a penalty stroke as time expired for a 1-1
game.
It remained 1-1 for the entire second half. Millett took the final
shot of the half with five minutes to play but it was blocked and
the game would eventually go into overtime.
SU was never able to get a shot off in the extra period before the
Greyhounds' Kelly O'Donnell scored on her own rebound
to end the game.
The Crusaders return to action on Oct. 2 with a 7 p.m. game at
William Paterson.
