WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – A 3-1 road win by the Susquehanna men's soccer team over rival Lycoming kept the Battle of the Boot trophy in the hands of the Crusaders for the second-straight season. The victory also marked the 10th by SU in a Battle of the Boot rivalry that dates back to 2001 as Susquehanna now boasts a 10-3 record in rivalry games against the Warriors.
Kyle Semmel (Burlington Township, N.J./Holy Cross) scored two of SU's three goals in the game while the third was scored by Nick Fecci (Point Pleasant, N.J./Point Pleasant), who netted his first collegiate goal. Semmel led the team with a game-high four shots and Ryan Donlevie (Stratham, N.H./Exeter) added two assists on the evening.
The Crusaders (2-1) doubled the Warriors (0-2) in shots, 16-8, and had five corner kicks to Lycoming's two. SU goalie Matt Salsman (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove Area) allowed only one goal, which came in the first half, and finished with four saves.
Semmel got the scoring started at the 16:46 mark of the first half on a shot that knocked off the crossbar then went off Lycoming goalie Connor Keenan's hands and into the goal for a 1-0 Crusader lead.
The Warriors responded with their first score of the game less than 10 minutes later and that remained the score as the first half expired.
That 1-1 score did not last long into the second half, though, as Semmel struck again less than five minutes into the period with what would stand as the game-winning goal. Then, with 22 minutes to play, Fecci teamed up with Donlevie to score his first collegiate goal and tack on an insurance score for the Crusaders on a shot from 15 yards out.
SU returns home on Sept. 7 to host PSU-Altoona at 1 p.m. in the first of five-straight home games.
