CARLISLE, Pa. – Two first-half goals over a three-minute
span was all the Susquehanna field hockey team needed in its 2-0
blanking of Dickinson College. SU captured its third-straight win
to improve to 3-1 this season.
Dickinson (1-2) actually held a 19-15 edge in shots but Crusader
goalie Margaret Ruth (Lewisberry, Pa./Northern)
racked up eight saves to help preserve the shutout. Despite being
edged in total shots, Susquehanna put 11 of its shots on goal while
holding the Red Devils to just eight shots on goal all game.
Katherine Millett (Auburn, Maine/North Yarmouth
Academy) led the squad with six shots and scored the
opening goal of the game, which also proved to be the game winner.
Megan McClellan (Oley, Pa./Oley Valley) scored the
team's insurance goal and finished with three shots on the
afternoon.
At the 26:21 mark of the first half, Millett scored an unassisted
goal to put the Crusaders up 1-0 with less than 10 minutes to play
in the period. Almost exactly three minutes later, McClellan netted
the game's second goal thanks in part to an assist from
Rebecca Marion (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) to
make it a 2-0 game at halftime.
SU added nine more shots in the second half and despite not
scoring another goal, the Crusader defense was able to continue to
keep Dickinson off the scoreboard and held the Red Devils without a
shot for the final 3:48 of the game.
Susquehanna returns home on Sept. 10 to host Elmira at 7 p.m.
