SELINSGROVE, Pa. – The Susquehanna women's volleyball team
continued its torrid start to the season, going 2-0 on the second
day of the team's annual Hampton Inn Crusader Classic.
SU improves its record to 5-1 on the season, marking the team's
best start since 2008, a year in which SU finished with 27
victories.
The Crusaders won consecutive 3-0 matches against Allegheny and
Lycoming. The team day opened with quick work of Allegheny, winning
25-7, 26-24, 25-21. Freshman Erin Byrne (San
Diego, Calif./Scripps Ranch) had a solid all-around match
with 14 kills, four service aces (a match-high) and six digs.
Classmate Maggie
O'Hearn (Mountville, Pa./Hempfield) led all players
with 34 assists to go along with nine digs. The team racked up
three solo blocks – all from Hayley
Dunkel (Pottsville, Pa./Pottsville Area) –
and six block assists while hitting .299 as a team.
In the nightcap, Susquehanna won 29-27, 25-12, 25-13 over
Lycoming. Byrne finished with a double-double as she registered 14
kills and 14 digs in the victory, in addition to her four service
aces. Jessica Holm
(Montvale, N.J./Pascack Hills) added 13 kills of her own
while O'Hearn amassed 37 assists, five digs and one service ace.
Sarah
Paluck (Nesquehoning, Pa./Tamaqua Area), meanwhile,
recorded 13 digs while Dunkel added seven kills and three digs.
O'Hearn finished the day with 71 assists and 14 digs while Byrne
accounted for 28 kills and 20 digs.
The Crusaders cap off the three-day tournament with two matches on
Sunday. The team faces Misericordia at 10 a.m. followed by a 12
p.m. match against Morrisville.
