MADISON, N.J. – Leading by three with just 2:32 remaining in
the game, the Susquehanna women's basketball team watched
that lead slipped away as Drew University came out on the winning
side of a 62-58 Landmark Conference decision.
The Crusaders (6-6, 0-2) were up 54-49 at after a Mariah
Monahan (Towanda, Pa./Towanda Area) layup at the 3:51 mark
but SU was out-scored 13-4 over the remainder of the game and
ultimately fell by four points.
Monahan led Susquehanna with 18 points. Jonaida Williams
(Williamsport, Pa./Loyalsock) had seven points and six
rebounds while Nikki Komara (Shamokin, Pa./Lourdes
Regional) led the team with her eight rebounds while also
chipping in three points, three assists and four steals.
Susquehanna shot better than 55 percent from three-point range
(5-of-9) but shot only 37.3 percent from the floor and just 60
percent at the free throw line.
Drew (8-5, 1-1) started out strong, taking a 13-3 lead less than
six minutes into the game. The Crusaders found themselves down by
12, 20-8, with 6:17 left in the half but a Brianna Murphy
(Hazlet, N.J./Mater Dei Prep) jumper with 50 seconds left
brought her team within just four (24-20) before SU eventually
headed into halftime trailing by six (26-20).
The Crusaders took their first lead since the 18:41 mark of the
first half when Heather Zinn (York, Pa./West York
Area) drained a three to make it 32-30 with 16:37
remaining. Susquehanna remained in the lead (40-39) five minutes
later and upped its lead to eight (52-44) on a Monahan jumper with
5:31 to play.
Unfortunately, the Rangers tied the game at 54 on a Courtney
Stephens trey which permanently swung the lead back in Drew's
favor as the Rangers held off the Crusaders down the stretch for
the 62-58 win
SU remains on the road to face Goucher on Wednesday, Jan. 15 at 7
p.m.
