SCRANTON, Pa. – The Susquehanna women's swimming
team continued its strong start to begin 2014 by defeating Marywood
and Juniata in Landmark Conference action on Saturday afternoon at
the Marywood Aquatic Center.
The Crusaders defeated the host Pacers 114-104 and beat the
Eagles 133.5-60.5 to improve to 5-1 in Landmark meets this
season.
SU won the day's first event, the 200 medley relay, as
Erin McElwee (Phoenixville, Pa. / Phoenixville
Area), Kelsey Lessard (Chestertown, Md. / Queen
Anne's County), Ashlee Weingarten
(Hackettstown, N.J. / Hackettstown) and Julia
Doherty (Pelham, N.Y. / Pelham Memorial) captured first
place with a time of 1:55.31.
Junior Kyle Seaman (Moreland Hills, Ohio /
Orange) won the 1000 free with her personal-best mark of
11:15.55, the sixth-best time in program history. Senior
Kate Mays (Holland, Pa. / Nazareth Academy)
followed in second place with a PR of 11:35.41.
Seaman also won the 100 free with a reading of
56.37, edging Lessard who finished in second
(56.41), a PR and eighth-fastest time in school history.
In the 200 free, Lexi Cole (Danville, Pa. / Danville
Area) took home second-place honors with a time of
2:06.27. Senior Sam Meringolo (Martinsville, N.J. /
Bridgewater-Raritan) finished in third with her
personal-best mark of 2:07.20.
Annie Bruxelles (Hockessin, Del. / Sanford
School) placed second in the 50 free, touching the wall in
26.54. Lessard won the 400 IM with her reading of
4:54.57 and Caroline Henderson (Berkeley Heights, N.J. /
Governor Livingston) followed in second place with a
personal-best mark of 5:06.21.
In the 100 fly, Weingarten narrowly edged
Juniata's Erika Fimple to win the event in
1:01.33. Meringolo finished in third place with
her mark of 1:04.22 followed by Avanti Banks (East
Stroudsburg, Pa. / Stroudsburg) (1:07.00).
SU took home the third through fifth spots in the 100 backstroke
as McElwee, Bruxelles and
Cole posted times of 1:04.31, 1:04.61 and 1:05.05,
respectively. Paige Wagner (Rising Sun, Md. / Rising
Sun) won the 100 breaststroke with her time of
1:12.38.
In the 500 free, Henderson finished in second
place, touching the wall in 5:35.38. Val Stearns (North
Wales, Pa. / North Penn) took home third-place honors with
a mark of 5:44.95 and Morgan Sattler (Doylestown, Pa. /
Central Bucks East) placed fourth with a time of
5:46.84.
The Crusaders host Bloomsburg on Friday, Jan. 17 at 6 p.m. and
Franklin & Marshall on Saturday, Jan. 18 at 2 p.m. for Senior
Day.
