SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Steven Weidlich (Watchung,
N.J./Watchung Hills) netted a game-high 20 points in
Susquehanna's 79-64 win over visiting Merchant Marine
Academy. Weidlich was one of four SU players in double figures as
the Crusaders have now won seven of their last nine games.
Susquehanna (10-5, 2-2) shot better than 47 percent from the floor
and committed only four turnovers all game while forcing 15 by the
Mariners (6-9, 1-4).
Weidlich scored 12 of his 20 points from beyond the arc while
Matt McGugan (Silver Spring, Md./Blake) finished
with 15 points, 10 of which came in the first half. Harley
Sellinger (Mill Hall, Pa./Central Mountain) tallied 16
points and nine rebounds and Jake Eskin (Germantown,
Md./Churchill) added 11 points and six boards.
Susquehanna opened the game on an 11-5 run with six of those
points coming from Eskin. Less than eight minutes into the game,
USMMA tied the game for the first time at 13-all and the Mariners
went up 16-15 at the 10:37 mark of the half.
Little did the Mariners know, however, that it would be their last
lead of the afternoon. With 3:54 to play in the half, SU had built
an 11-point lead (34-32) on a McGugan three-pointer and went into
halftime with a 16-point advantage (40-24).
Five minutes into the second period, a three-point play from
Brandon Hedley (Silver Spring, Md./Salisbury Prep)
gave the Crusaders an 18-point edge at 48-30 and SU led by 10
(55-45) with 7:35 to play.
The Mariners cut the lead to single digits (53-45) for the first
time since the 4:19 mark of the first on an Andrew Williams jumper
at 8:17. The Crusaders countered, though, with an 11-4 run to back
up by 15 (64-49) with 5:18 remaining.
USMMA was unable to close the gap to under 11 points for the
remaining minutes of the game as SU went on to the 79-64
victory.
