WASHINGTON, D.C. – Junior Jonaida Williams (South
Williamsport, Pa. / Loyalsock Township) scored a game-high
20 points on Wednesday evening but the Susquehanna women's
basketball team fell at Catholic 75-66 in Landmark Conference
action.
Williams shot 6-for-10 from the field, 2-of-3 from downtown and
6-of-6 from the charity stripe en route to her 20 points. The
junior also finished with five boards and two steals in 32 minutes
of action.
SU (8-7, 2-3 Landmark) also received offense from senior guard
Mariah Monahan (Towanda, Pa. / Towanda) who scored
19 points, including a perfect 12-of-12 from the foul line.
Freshman Nikki Komara (Shamokin, Pa. / Lourdes
Regional) recorded a double-double with 13 points and a
team-best 10 rebounds.
In the opening minutes of the contest, the Crusaders jumped out
to a 6-3 lead but Catholic (12-3, 5-0 Landmark) countered with a
quick run and tied the game at 10 with 14:20 to go.
SU responded with an 11-2 run capped off by a Komara layup to go
ahead 21-12 at the 11:48 mark of the first half. However, the
Cardinals trimmed that advantage to three (23-20) before freshman
Nicole Gault (Medford, N.J. / Shawnee) knocked
down a bucket to push the SU lead back to four (25-21) with 7:35
left. Again, Catholic had an answer, though, and went on a 20-8 run
and the Crusaders went into intermission trailing 41-33.
The Crusaders found themselves behind by 14 points (47-33) five
minutes into the second half but cut the deficit to nine (49-40)
thanks to a three-pointer by freshman Sofia Schedler
(Alexandria, Va. / TC Williams) at 12:42.
Unfortunately for SU, another Catholic spurt put Susquehanna in
a 12-point hole before Williams knocked down a jumper to get the
Crusaders within seven (62-55) with four minutes to play.
Williams registered a layup at 3:18 to bring SU within four
(63-59) but this was the nearest the Cardinals allowed the
Crusaders to get the remainder of the contest as Catholic held on
for the 75-66 victory.
The Cardinals had a balanced scoring attack with five players
finishing in double figures, led by 17 points apiece by
Josephine Migash and Jayni
Webster.
SU travels to Moravian on Saturday at 4 p.m.
