BETHLEHEM, Pa. – A back-and-forth game between the Susquehanna and Moravian women's basketball teams ended in a 67-65 victory for the Greyhounds in a Landmark Conference matchup.
The game featured nine tied scores and 11 lead changes and at one time SU held and eight-point edge. Unfortunately, the Crusaders (8-8, 2-4) could not put the game away as Moravian (14-3, 5-1) grabbed its fifth league win of the season.
Mariah Monahan (Towanda, Pa./Towanda) led Susquehanna with 16 points on 6-of-15 shooting while also adding four assists. Freshman Nicole Gault (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) recorded a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds while adding four blocks.
It was a back-and-forth game in the early going and the Crusaders led 11-8 on an Anna Bojakowski (Toms River, N.J./Toms River South) layup just inside the 13-minute mark before four unanswered Greyhounds points handed Moravian a one-point advantage (12-11) with 12 minutes left in the half.
With 8:37 to play, the Greyhounds still led by one, 19-18, before Susquehanna tied the game at 21 after a Williams layup at the 6:35 mark of the half. The teams traded buckets and with 1:48 to play, the teams found themselves knotted at 32 before Gault made back-to-back buckets that helped put her team ahead 36-34 at the end of the half.
Less than seven minutes into the second period, the Crusaders had built a seven-point edge, 49-42, thanks in part to a Sofia Schedler (Alexandria, Va./TC Williams) three. Moravian then tied the game at 51 with 10:52 to play and briefly led 53-52.
Monahan's layup swung the lead back in the favor of SU, 54-53, and her two free throws at the 5:13 mark kept the team ahead by three (58-55).
However, Moravian went on a 12-5 run to take a 67-63 lead inside with only 1:16 left to play. The Greyhounds remained ahead by two, 67-65, with 21 seconds on the clock and the Crusaders were unable to get another shot off in the closing seconds.
