SELINSGROVE, Pa. – The Susquehanna women's basketball
team led from start to finish in its 66-60 victory over visiting
Landmark Conference foe Juniata to open a three-game homestand on a
high note.
Wednesday night's win marked SU's first victory
against Juniata since a 74-73 overtime win on Dec. 4, 2010.
The team was led by the efforts of Jonaida Williams
(Williamsport, Pa./Loyalsock Twp.) who led all scorers
with 21 points (8-of-11) and added a team-high 10 boards for a
double-double. Mariah Monahan (Towanda, Pa./Towanda
Area) and Nikki Komara (Shamokin,
Pa./Lourdes) each added 12 points with Komara also
finishing with a game-high eight assists.
Monahan went 6-of-6 at the free throw line and has now made her
last 30 shots dating back to the team's 79-68 win over
King's on Jan. 8.
The Crusaders (9-8, 3-4) shot a 55 percent clip (11-of-20) from
three-point range while holding the Eagles to a 14 percent effort
(3-of-21) from beyond the arc. SU also shot better than 40 percent
from the floor and had 32 points in the paint to Juniata's
18.
It took Susquehanna less than eight minutes to build a
double-digit lead over the Eagles when two Komara free throws at
the 12:19 mark put her team ahead 19-8. A layup from Williams
subsequently made it a 21-8 game before Juniata went on a 12-0 run
that trimmed SU's lead to just one (21-20) with 7:37 to play
in the half.
The Crusaders were able to fend off the Eagles, however, and
despite a layup from Juniata's Paige Dennison at the
52-second mark of the half still led by three (29-26) at the midway
point of the game.
A 10-2 run by Susquehanna opened the second half as SU regained a
double-digit lead (38-28). Komara's trey with 13:30 on the
clock gave the Crusaders their biggest lead of the game to that
point (49-35) and another trey, this one from Monahan, made it
55-39 in favor of Susquehanna with just over 10 minutes to
play.
Juniata was able to pull within five points, 58-53, with 2:09
remaining but pulled no closer as the Eagles were held scoreless
for the final 1:02 of the game.
SU remains at home to host Drew on Saturday, Feb. 1 at 4 p.m.
