SELINSGROVE, Pa. – The Susquehanna men's basketball team closed out the non-conference portion of its schedule by defeating visiting Misericordia 83-69 on Wednesday night.
The Crusaders, who moved to 8-4 on the season and have now won five of their last six games, were led in scoring by Brandon Hedley's (Silver Spring, Md./Salisbury Prep) 30 points, 21 of which came from three-point range. Four other players had at least 11 points including 16 from Harley Sellinger (Mill Hall, Pa./Central Mountain) and 13 from Phil Madison (Johnstown, Pa./Great Johnstown), who made the first start of his collegiate career.
Matt McGugan (Silver Spring, Md./Blake) and Sellinger tied for the game-high in rebounds with eight apiece and McGugan also added a team-best five assists. Susquehanna held a significant edge over Misericordia (5-7) in total rebounds (41-28) and shot 47.5 percent from the floor and 85 percent at the free throw line.
The opening minutes of the game were a back-and-forth battle with SU holding a four-point advantage, 11-7, on a McGugan jumper at the 13:15 mark. Susquehanna found itself up by 11, 29-18, thanks to a Sellinger jumper with 6:55 on the clock.
With just under two minutes to play in the half, the Crusaders were still up by seven, 36-29, and went into halftime holding a five-point edge at 36-31.
Hedley's three at the 17:21 mark of the second half handed a double-digit lead back to SU (46-36) and Sellinger's layup four minutes later increased that margin to 13 (54-41).
Misericordia was able to cut the lead to just six (56-50) with 11:06 still to play but the Crusader defense did not let the Cougars pull any closer for the remainder of the game. Susquehanna was back up by 13, 63-50, a mere two minutes later and led by double digits for the final 2:36 of the game en route to the final 83-68 victory.
Susquehanna is on the road Saturday to face Landmark Conference opponent Drew at 2 p.m.
