Box Score SELINSGROVE, Pa. – The Susquehanna field hockey team fell 2-1 to the visiting Moravian Greyhounds on Saturday afternoon in a Landmark Conference contest.
Catherine Duffin scored both goals for Moravian (6-7, 1-3) while Lauren Cram (East Brunswick, N.J./East Brunswick) found the back of the net for the Crusaders (6-8, 1-3).
Duffin started the scoring in the eighth minute when she collected her own rebound and beat keeper Alyssa Rothman (Trooper, Pa./Methacton), who finished the game with five saves. SU followed up with three penalty corners in quick succession, but were unable to convert the opportunities into goals. For the game, the Crusaders held a 14-8 advantage in corners and a 19-10 margin in shots.
Right before the end of the half, Duffin extended the lead to 2-0 after dribbling into the circle and beating Rothman to the right.
SU came out of the break energized and was able to keep the ball in its own offensive zone for long stretches. Katherine Millett (Auburn, Maine/North Yarmouth Academy) had a shot saved in the 43rd minute, which was followed by two more corners for Susquehanna. The team finally broke through at 44:54 when Cram buried a ball from Cayla Spatz (Sinking Spring, Pa./Berks Catholic) in the net.
The Crusaders earned another goal-scoring opportunity in the 54th minute in the form of a penalty stroke, but the shot from Megan McClellan (Oley, Pa./Oley Valley) was turned away by the Moravian keeper. SU's last shot on goal came in the 63rd when a shot by Tessa Woodring (Mifflinburg, Pa./Mifflinburg Area) was saved.
Both teams wore pink during warm-ups to promote breast cancer awareness and earlier in the week, SU team members collected money for Play4TheCure, a foundation dedicated to raising funds for National Foundation for Cancer Research.
Susquehanna returns to action on Tuesday, Oct. 21 when it plays a rescheduled game against Juniata at 7:00 p.m.
