Box Score TOWSON, Md. – The 2014 season came to an end on Saturday for the Susquehanna women's soccer team as the Crusaders dropped a 2-1 road decision to Goucher.
SU (6-11-2, 1-5-1) fell into a 2-0, first-half hole before a goal from senior Sam Zuponcic (Mantua, Ohio/Crestwood/Hiram) in the 57th minute cut that lead in half with plenty of time for the Crusaders to mount a comeback.
Unfortunately, time ran out on SU as the Gophers (5-11-1, 2-5-0) held on for the 2-1 win.
Zuponcic led all players with seven shots, three of which were on goal. Alyssa Bolger (Stanhope, N.J./Pope John Regional) finished with three shots while Kate Wiley (Sellersville, Pa./Pennridge) added two.
The Susquehanna defense limited Goucher to just five shots and one corner kick all game; unfortunately, two of those five shots were goals.
The game was scoreless for the majority of the first half with just one shot taken by either team in the first 38 minutes of the game. Unfortunately, Goucher's first shot of the afternoon came in the form of a goal when Stephanie Budrock scored in the 39th minute to put her team up 1-0.
The scoring continued for the Gophers less than three minutes later when Gaby Davis netted a goal off an assist from Lindsey Puopolo for the 2-0 Goucher advantage.
SU did fire off three shots in the final 2:46 of the half but the final two were saved by Goucher goalie Lexi Rudolph to keep it 2-0 at halftime.
Zuponcic ended the scoring drought for the Crusaders with an unassisted goal at the 56:20 mark of the game, her team-leading 12th goal of the fall.
With less than four minutes to play, Zuponcic had a chance to score the equalizer but her shot was again saved by Rudolph, who finished the contest with 10 saves.
Susquehanna was, however, awarded a corner kick with a mere 25 seconds to play but the Crusaders were unable to get a shot off as the game ended 2-1 in favor of the Gophers.
