Box Score FROSTBURG, Md. – A furious comeback attempt unfortunately fell short for the Susquehanna women's basketball team on Saturday evening as the Crusaders fell to the Gettysburg Bullets, 58-59, in their season debut at the Jim Crawley Tournament hosted by Frostburg State.
Nikki Komara (Shamokin, Pa./Lourdes Regional) finished with a complete stat line for SU with 20 points on 7-for-11 shooting, eight rebounds, six assists, one steal and only one turnover.
Freshman Angie Schedler (Alexandria, Va./T.C. Williams) was also impressive in her collegiate debut and provided a spark off the bench with 16 points behind four three-pointers, two assists and three steals.
Susquehanna was strong out of the gate and jumped ahead to a 21-12 lead just past the midpoint of the first half, but Gettysburg fought back and scored the next 14 points to earn a 26-21 advantage.
A three-point play from Komara reduced the deficit to two, although the Bullets would score the next six and take a 32-24 lead into the break.
Early in the second half, both teams traded baskets with SU unable to cut the margin to less than five. Gettysburg led by as many as 11 points (43-32), but shortly after, a run by the Crusaders brought them back into the game.
A made free throw by Komara and back-to-back three-pointers from Jonaida Williams (Williamsport, Pa./Loyalsock Twp.) and Ashley Burroughs (Parsippany, N.J./Parsippany) cut the deficit to only four.
Although Emily Gibbons of the Bullets scored consecutive layups to make it 47-42, Williams struck with another basket from beyond the arc to keep things close. Another three-point play from Komara brought SU within two and a pair of free throws from Williams evened the game at 47-47.
After the Crusaders answered a basket with a layup from Andreana MacIvor (Boiling Springs, Pa./Boiling Springs), the Bullets went on a 9-1 run to lead 58-50 with less than a minute left.
At that point, SU heated up from downtown as Schedler and Komara both hit threes to bring Susquehanna within two. A layup from Komara knotted the game at 58-58 with 18 seconds remaining, but a foul with only three seconds left on the clock sent Gettysburg's Jamie Relin to the line.
Although Relin hit only one of her two free throws, it was enough to give the Bullets the lead for good as the Crusaders failed to get a shot off at the conclusion of the game.
The team continues play at Frostburg State with a Sunday consolation game against Westminster, who lost to the hosts, 73-69, in double overtime. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
