WASHINGTON, D.C. – Despite trailing by two at
intermission, the Susquehanna men's basketball team put
together a 42-point second half to defeat Catholic 73-67 on
Wednesday evening.
The win snaps a three-game losing streak to the Cardinals (14-8,
8-3 Landmark) and is the first win at the DuFour Athletic Center
for SU (13-9, 5-6 Landmark) since 2010.
Senior center Harley Sellinger (Mill Hall, Pa. / Central
Mountain) pumped in a game-high 25 points behind a
12-for-16 shooting performance and grabbed a contest-best 15
rebounds for his eighth double-double this season and
16th of his career. Sellinger is now 50 points away from
1,000 for his career.
Classmate Jake Eskin (Germantown, Md. /
Churchill) contributed 17 points, seven assists and five
rebounds while Brandon Hedley (Silver Spring, Md. /
Salisbury Prep) and Matt McGugan (Silver Spring,
Md. / Blake) each scored 13 points apiece for the Orange
& Maroon.
SU opened up the game with two quick buckets by Eskin and
Tre Dean (Dallas, Texas / Greenhill School) to
take an early 4-0 lead. The Cardinals chipped away, though, and
tied the game at 12 after a Kyle Phanord three at 13:22.
The Crusaders reclaimed the lead 21-18 with 7:54 left in the
opening half after a three-point play by Eskin and went up by five
(29-24) following a long-range shot by Hedley with four minutes to
play. However, a Catholic 9-2 run to close the half put the
Crusaders in a two-point halftime deficit.
In the second half, the Crusaders trailed 47-40 with 13 minutes
remaining and would not take the lead until a Sellinger layup with
8:57 to play, as SU went ahead 52-50, capping off a 12-3 run.
Again, Catholic would regain the lead but consecutive field
goals by Sellinger handed the lead back to SU (61-56) with a little
over four minutes to play.
The Cardinals pulled within four with 54 ticks on the clock but
five made free throws by the Crusaders put the contest out of reach
as SU held on for the key conference victory.
Corey Stanford scored 22 points for the Cardinals and Bryson
Fonville and Jared Prince registered 15 and 14 points,
respectively.
The Crusaders host Moravian on Saturday at 2 p.m. as Susquehanna
Athletics celebrates its annual Pepsi Day with free soda and hot
dogs for all fans.
