SELINSGROVE, Pa. – There were six lead changes and the
Susquehanna women's basketball team held a four-point
advantage with 15 minutes to play but ultimately did not have
enough to hand visiting Moravian a loss as SU fell 76-65 on Senior
Day for the Crusaders.
The team honored its four senior members – Amanda
Eich, Candence Cannady (Chicago, Ill./Whitney M.
Young Magnet), Jackie Clarke (Mahopec, N.Y./Marina
Regional) and Mariah Monahan (Towanda, Pa./Towanda
Area) – prior to the start of the game.
SU (11-11, 5-7) had three players in double figures, including
Monahan with 14 points who also added four assists, four steals and
four rebounds. Freshman Nikki Komara (Shamokin, Pa./Lourdes
Regional) led the team with 15 points and seven rebounds
and classmate Heather Zinn (York, Pa./West York
Area) finished with 11 points in 13 minutes of action.
While Susquehanna was able to shoot 41 percent from the floor,
Moravian (19-4, 10-2) shot 47 percent overall and sank 89 percent
of its free throw attempts, a key in the win.
The game certainly did not start out in the Crusaders' favor
as the Greyhounds went up by nine (14-5) early in the action. A
Nicole Gault (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) jumper at the
7:06 mark trimmed Moravian's lead to just one, though, at
16-15 and Catherine Malatack (Narbeth, Pa./Archbishop
Carroll) put SU ahead with a jumper on the very next
possession.
That lead only lasted one possession, though, and the Greyhounds
went back up by nine (28-19) with just under three minutes to play
in the opening half. It remained a nine-point Moravian lead at
halftime after the Greyhounds' Laura Jordan made a layup at
the 32-second mark to account for the final points in the half.
Twenty seconds into the second half, a Katie O'Rourke free
throw gave Moravian its first double-digit lead of the evening
(33-23) before an 18-4 SU run put the Crusaders ahead by four,
41-37, with 15 minutes still to play. Susquehanna still led by one,
43-42, after a Komara layup with 13:50 on the clock but Moravian
tied it at 45 just two minutes later.
Four Moravian free throws over a 25-second span made it 49-45 in
favor of the Greyhounds and they would lead for the remainder of
the game.
Susquehanna found itself down by nine (62-53) with six minutes
remaining and the deficit grew to 12, 71-59, with just 1:53
remaining to attempt a comeback. Unfortunately, Moravian sank all
five free throws down the stretch to come away with the 76-65
win.
During halftime of Saturday's game – which also marked
Pepsi Day for the program – Susquehanna recognized
Karyn Kern Pinter '01 for her recent
induction into the Middle Atlantic Conference Hall of Fame.
Susquehanna is back in action Wednesday when the team travels to
Juniata for a 7 p.m. contest.
