SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Four players in double figures, including
two double-doubles, helped lead the Susquehanna women's
basketball team to a 69-52 Landmark Conference victory over
visiting Goucher College on Wednesday night. The Crusaders (11-8,
5-4) have now swept the season series from the Gophers (5-14,
1-8).
Freshman Nikki Komara (Shamokin, Pa./Lourdes) had
11 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Senior Mariah
Monahan (Towanda, Pa./Towanda Area) had a double-double,
as well, with 10 points and a game-best 14 assists. Jonaida
Williams (Williamsport, Pa./Loyalsock Twp.) also finished
in double figures with 19 points while Nicole Gault
(Medford, N.J./Shawnee) had 12 points in 23 minutes of
action.
SU finished with 44 boards to Goucher's 39 and had 38 points
in the paint while limiting the Gophers to just 20. Susquehanna
also committed just eight turnovers all evening while forcing 17 by
Goucher.
Goucher opened the game with back-to-back buckets from Amaka
Ezeani before Williams tied it at four on a jumper at the 18:02
mark. It remained tied 7-7 less than two minutes later before a
Williams trey handed her team a 14-11 lead with 13:48
remaining.
SU upped that margin to 10 (27-17) with 7:18 to play in the half
but Goucher chipped away at the lead. The Gophers got within four
(33-29) at the 12-second mark of the half before Gault ended the
first-half scoring with a layup with four seconds remaining to give
Susquehanna a 35-29 halftime advantage.
Goucher kept it a four-point contest, 42-38, on a Sharnell Huff
trey less than five minutes into the second period. However, six
unanswered points from the Crusaders again put them ahead by 10
(48-38) with just over 13 minutes to play.
With 8:10 on the clock, Susquehanna found itself leading by nine
(54-45) before a Monahan free throw put the team back up by
double-digits. The Crusaders would not let their lead dip below 10
points for the remaining eight minutes of the game and at one point
led by 20 (69-49) after a Komara layup at the 2:06 mark.
