SCRANTON, Pa. – A dominant Scranton team was too much for the Susquehanna women's basketball team to handle as the Crusaders fell 69-40 in Saturday's Landmark Conference game.
SU (11-9, 5-5) never held a lead in the game and saw no players reach double figures. Mariah Monahan (Towanda, Pa./Towanda Area) led the team with nine points while freshman Danielle Palazzi (Newfoundland, Pa./Wallenpaupack Area) finished with seven points.
Susquehanna shot only 26 percent from the floor while the Lady Royals (17-3, 9-1) sank 46 percent of their shots and forced 28 SU turnovers which translated into 28 points for Scranton.
The Lady Royals– a team that just dropped out of the national rankings – jumped out to a 13-4 lead less than six minutes into the game and led by 11 (17-6) at the 12-minute mark of the half. With 10 minutes to play, the Lady Royals had built a 15-point lead (23-8) and upped it to a 17-point margin, 27-10, with 5:45 left in the half.
Monahan ended the first-half scoring with a free throw that made it 41-18. Monahan finished with six of SU's 18 points in the half.
The Lady Royals went up by 25 (43-18) less than two minutes into the second half. A Heather Zinn (York, Pa./West York Area) trey made it 45-24 with 17:23 to play and Monahan drained a three of her own at the 13:45 mark to cut the lead to less than 20 points (47-28).
Unfortunately that was the last time SU was able to get the lead inside 20 points. At the two-minute mark Scranton maintained a 66-40 lead and went on to the eventual 69-40 win.
The Crusaders return home to host Catholic on Wednesday, Feb. 12 at 7 p.m.
