ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – A 19-goal outburst propelled the
Susquehanna women's lacrosse team to a 19-3 Landmark
Conference-opening victory over Elizabethtown on Saturday
afternoon.
The win snapped a brief, three-game slide for SU (2-3, 1-0) and
gave the team a winning start to conference play. Saturday's
contest was Elizabethtown's first Landmark Conference game
since joining the league this season.
Eleven different players picked up at least one goal for the
Crusaders with Meredith Crane (Maplewood,
N.J./Columbia), Brynn Reid (West Grove, Pa./Avon
Grove) and Michelle McGinniss (Randolph,
N.J./Randolph) scoring three apiece. McGinniss also added
three assists.
As a team, Susquehanna fired off 30 shots to the Blue Jays'
11 and won 17 draw controls while limiting Elizabethtown (0-4, 0-1)
to only seven draw control wins all afternoon.
Goalie Alyssa Rothman (Trooper, Pa./Methacton)
started the game and Carolyn Figliola (Weston,
Conn./Weston) played the final 30 minutes. Each finished
with three saves.
A mere four minutes into the game, SU had already jumped out to a
5-0 lead with three goals from McGinniss and two from Reid.
Elizabethtown got on the scoreboard at the 25:51 mark to make it a
5-1 game but the Crusaders tacked on four more unanswered goals for
a 9-1 lead after less than 10 minutes of play.
A free position goal from the Blue Jays' Dana Robidoux made
it 9-2 with 17:13 still to play but SU ended the half with five
unanswered goals to go into halftime holding a 14-2 lead.
The Susquehanna defense held Elizabethtown to a single goal over
the final 30 minutes of play while the Crusaders added five of
their own including two in the final 7:34 of the game.
SU opens its home season on March 22 with a 12 p.m. game against
Landmark Conference opponent Scranton.
