WINCHESTER, Va. – The Susquehanna men's lacrosse team
used a nine-goal second half to break a 4-4 halftime tie and go on
to win 13-9 at Shenandoah on Thursday afternoon. This marked the
first of back-top-back road games this week for SU.
Ryan Buckley (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward Melville)
and Pat Brogan (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) each had
tricks with Brogan also adding two goals for a five-point
afternoon. Austen Lein (New Vernon, N.J./Madison)
tied for a game-high with three assists while also adding a goal
and Jake Calder (Lutherville, Md./Dulaney) netted
two goals to go along with one assist.
Three goalies saw playing time for the Crusaders (2-2).
Jared Knowlton (North Salem, N.Y./Kent School)
started the game and logged 30 minutes of work while Ted
Benoit (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) played all but the final
39 seconds of the game when Michael Fairley (Frederick,
Md./St. Maria Goretti) took over. Knowlton had three saves
while Benoit picked up one while allowing just one goal.
The Susquehanna defense had a solid game, picking up 34 ground
balls to Shenandoah's 27 and forced 18 Hornets (3-3)
turnovers while limiting Shenandoah to only 18 shots all
afternoon.
Shenandoah out-scored SU 3-1 in the opening quarter with Calder
accounting for the lone Crusader goal. The second quarter was the
complete opposite as Susquehanna struck three times while limiting
the Hornets to only score. Three different players accounted for
the SU goals and the teams went into halftime tied at four.
The third quarter was all Susquehanna. The teams traded goals to
start the period before the Crusaders scored five unanswered goals
over an 11-minute span to go ahead by five goals, 10-5, heading
into the final quarter of play.
That scoring streak continued with back-to-back goals from Brogan
and Buckley to up SU's lead to 12-5 and the Crusaders held
Shenandoah off the scoreboard for the final four minutes to seal
the 13-7 victory.
Susquehanna remains on the road to face Randolph-Macon on March 8
