DOVER, Del. – A program record 15-game win streak came to an
end in extra innings for the Susquehanna baseball team as SU fell
7-6 to Wesley on the road.
The Crusaders (15-4) led by three runs after six innings but could
not hold off the Wolverines (12-8). The 15-game win streak not only
marked a program record, it tied for the longest streak in Landmark
Conference history.
Dylan Glassmire (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks
South) went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and a RBI in the
loss while Ben Miller (Columbia, Md./Hammond)
drove in two runs.
Starting pitcher Eric Soranno (Watchung, N.J./Watchung
Hills) tossed the first 5.2 innings and gave up three runs
on six hits with five strikeouts. A.J. Pinto (Bronxville,
N.Y./Forhdam Prep) gave up two runs in his 1.1 innings of
work before giving way to Brett Newman (Washington
Crossing, Pa./Council Rock North) who tossed one scoreless
inning. Luc Kocher (Middlebury Center,
Pa./Elkland) came on to pitch the final 2.1 innings and
suffered the loss after giving up the game-winning run in the
bottom of the 11th.
The Crusaders fell into a 3-0 first-inning hole after
Wesley's Conner Gobright knocked a three-run homer to right
field with two outs in the inning. Gobright went on to go 3-for-5
with a game-high five RBI.
SU was able to respond with a run in the top half of the very next
inning when Nick Kennedy's (Brookeville, Md./Good
Council) one-out single scored Dylan Jenkins (Glen
Mills, Pa./Bayard Rustin), who had reached base on a
leadoff walk. Susquehanna then tacked on another run in the top of
the third on Miller's sac fly.
The top of the third saw the Crusaders break out for three runs on
three hits and one Wesley error. Palsi came up with a RBI single
and Susquehanna eventually came out of the inning ahead 5-3.
Susquehanna added a solo run in the fifth when Dylan
Glassmire (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks South) drove home
Ty Raubenstine (Elizabethville, Pa./Upper Dauphin
Area) on a single to right field for a 6-3 lead.
Unfortunately the Wolverines added two runs in the seventh off
Pinto and tied the game in the bottom of the ninth when Gobright
knocked a game-tying RBI single to right field off Kocher as the
game eventually headed into extra innings.
Kocher remained in the game in the 11th where he
allowed a one-out single to Cory Smith who then stole second. The
next batter, Trevor Mears, then proceeded to come up with the
game-winning hit, a single to left field that plated Smith.
The Crusaders return to action when they travel to Landmark
opponent Moravian for a three-game series on April 5-6.
