SELINSGROVE, Pa. – The Susquehanna softball team dropped a
pair of games by a combined three runs to visiting Muhlenberg on
Saturday afternoon in a non-conference doubleheader. SU fell 3-1 in
the opener before falling 3-2 in the second game of the
afternoon.
Game one starter Morgan Lewis (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock
North) limited the Mules to just three runs (two earned)
on seven hits but the Crusaders managed just six hits and one run
of their own. Lewis had seven strikeouts to just two walks in the
loss.
Six different players accounted for SU's six hits with
Amanda Neveroski (Toms River, N.J./Toms River
North) going 1-for-3 with one RBI and Lauren
Creamer (Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy) adding one hit and
scoring her team's lone run of the game.
Muhlenberg scored two of its three runs in the second inning with
both runs scoring on an Alexis Giovinazzo two-RBI single to right
field.
The Crusaders got back one of those runs on Neveroski's RBI
single to right field but in the top of the seventh, the Mules
tacked on an insurance run, thanks in part to a Susquehanna error,
to take a 3-1 lead. SU was retired in order in the seventh to end
the game.
In game two, Susquehanna out-hit Muhlenberg by an 8-6 margin but
still came up short. Bridget Rafter (Highlands, N.J./Henry
Hudson Regional) and Claire Hanratty (Severna
Park, Md./Severna Park) each had two hits and Anna
Heggenstaller (Liverpool, Pa./Greenwood) accounted for
SU's lone RBI in the game.
Pitcher Jamie Fesinstine (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris
Central) tossed all seven innings, scattering six hits
while striking out nine and did not allow a walk.
The Mules scored all three of their runs in the top of the fourth
with Taylor Trifiolis driving in two of the three runs.
In the bottom of the sixth, a Muhlenberg throwing error allowed
Sam LaCoe (Clarks Summit, Pa./Abington Heights) to
score after she had reached base on a fielding error by the
Mules' first baseman. Another error by the third baseman on a
ball hit by Heggenstaller allowed the inning's second run to
score and Muhlenberg suddenly led by just one run (3-2).
Unfortunately, the Crusaders went down in order in the
seventh.
SU remains at home to host Scranton on Sunday, April1 3 in a
Landmark Conference doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
