SELINSGROVE, Pa. – With a doubleheader sweep of Scranton on
Sunday afternoon, the Susquehanna softball team improved to 8-0 in
the Landmark Conference. SU took game one 8-0 in five innings and
followed that with a 7-3 game two victory.
Lauren Creamer's (Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy)
grand slam in game one promptly ended the game with one swing as
her homer made it an 8-0 game in the bottom of the fifth. Creamer
had a home run earlier in the game and added another homer in the
second game to finish the day 4-for-5 with three home runs, eight
RBI and four runs scored.
Game one starter Morgan Lewis (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock
North) tossed all five innings and gave up just one hit
while racking up seven strikeouts.
The Crusaders (17-11, 8-0) got on the board with two runs in the
second inning with Claire Hanratty (Severna Park,
Md./Severna Park) driving in the first run and
Creamer's single plating the second.
SU added another run in the third when Brianna Murphy
(Hazlet, N.J./Mater Dei Prep) led off with a triple and
came around to score on a Scranton error.
Creamer then led off the fourth with a solo shot to make it 4-0
before coming to bat with the bases loaded in the fifth and
knocking the ball over the fence to end the game in an 8-0
decision.
In the series finale, Creamer added another home run while
Hanratty went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and Sam LaCoe
(Clarks Summit, Pa./Abington Heights) drove in two runs on
two hits, including a home run that broke a 3-3 tie.
Pitcher Jamie Fesinstine (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris
Central) started the game and pitched into the fifth
inning when she allowed three runs and was then relieved by Lewis,
who pitched the final three innings and got credit for the win.
Susquehanna pushed three runs across the plate in the second with
Anna Heggenstaller (Liverpool, Pa./Greenwood)
driving in two of those runs with a two-run single to right field.
Amanda Neveroski's (Toms River, N.J./Toms River
North) single scored the third run and it stood 3-0 in
favor of the Crusaders after two innings of play.
It remained 3-0 until the top of the fifth when Fesinstine loaded
the bases with no outs and gave up a game-tying single to Gabrielle
Santarelli. Lewis then came on in relief and worked out of the jam
to keep it a 3-3 game.
In the bottom of the inning, LaCoe came to bat with one runner on
and one out and knocked a home run to left center to snap the 3-3
tie and make it 5-3 in favor of SU.
Still leading 5-3 in the bottom of the sixth, Creamer knocked her
third home run of the day – a two-run shot – over the
center field fence to quickly put Susquehanna ahead by four runs
(7-3).
Lewis then retired the Royals (6-15, 2-6) in order in the top of
the seventh to keep SU perfect in conference play.
The Crusaders return to action on April 17 for a doubleheader at
Gettysburg with first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m.
