SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Three first-inning runs by the
Susquehanna baseball team sparked the Crusaders to an 8-3 midweek
victory over visiting Elizabethtown on Wednesday afternoon.
SU (20-8) outhit the Blue Jays (13-14) by a 13-5 margin, with
freshman Dylan Jenkins (Glen Mills, Pa. / Bayard
Rustin) leading the offense with a game-high three hits
and two RBI. Taylor Luckenbill (Pottsville, Pa. / Nativity
BVM), Kyle Semmel (Burlington Twp., N.J. / Holy
Cross) and Bryan Palsi (Brielle, N.J. /
Manasquan) all had two hits each.
Freshman Bobby Wittemann (Warrington, Pa. / Central
Bucks South) earned his second win of the year, as the
righty struck out four while allowing one earned run in three
innings of work.
Classmates Liam Conboy (Old Tappan, N.J. / Northern
Valley Regional), Bobby Klatt (Leonardo, N.J. /
Mater Dei Prep), Brett Newman (Washington
Crossing, Pa. / Council Rock North) and A.J. Pinto
(Bronxville, N.Y. / Fordham Prep) all appeared out of the
bullpen and limited Elizabethtown to just two hits and one run the
rest of the way.
The Crusaders jumped on the Blue Jays early, plating three in
the bottom of the first. Ty Raubenstine (Elizabethville,
Pa. / Upper Dauphin Area) led off the frame with a single
to left center and later scored on an RBI double down the right
field line by Palsi.
Semmel followed with another RBI double, scoring Palsi, and
Jenkins cracked a run-scoring single to give SU the 3-0 edge.
The Blue Jays scored on a sacrifice fly in the third to cut into
the SU lead 3-1. But the Crusaders answered with one run on three
hits in the bottom of the inning, with Jenkins picking up another
RBI base knock, to go ahead 4-1.
Elizabethtown got within two, 4-2, scoring on a Crusader error
in the fourth. In the bottom of the sixth, Susquehanna plated two
runs, including an RBI double by Dylan Glassmire
(Doylestown, Pa. / Central Bucks South), to take a 7-2
lead.
SU is now 62-78 against the Blue Jays since the series began in
1930 and 6-17 since 2003. Elizabethtown will join the Landmark
Conference in baseball starting in 2015.
The Crusaders take on Drew in a Landmark Conference series,
beginning with a doubleheader on Friday at 1 p.m.
