MADISON, N.J. – The Susquehanna baseball team stretched its
win streak to five games with a doubleheader sweep of Drew on
Friday afternoon in Madison, N.J. SU won game one by a 6-1 score
before going on to capture a 13-1 decision in the nightcap.
The 13 runs are tied for the most scored in a single game this
season and are the most scored by SU in a seven-run game this
spring. The Crusader pitchers combined to give up just two runs
while the Susquehanna batters hit their way to 19 runs on 28
hits.
A strong finish to game one helped propel the Crusaders (22-8,
11-3) to the 6-1 victory as they scored all six runs over the final
three innings of the game, including a four-run seventh inning.
Casey Hood (Shrewsbury, Pa./Susquehannock) tossed
all seven innings, giving up just one run on five hits with three
strikeouts and one walk.
At the plate, five players had two hits in the game.
Taylor Luckenbill (Pottsville, Pa./Nativity BVM)
was 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored. Bryan Palsi
(Brielle, N.J./Manasquan) drove in two runs on two hits
and Jared Musilli (Branchville, N.J./High Point
Regional) was 2-for-3 with one run scored and one RBI.
It was actually the Rangers (12-16, 6-7) who struck first, though,
as they plated one run in the fourth inning on an Al Kraus sac
fly.
That lead did last long. In the top of the very next inning,
Musilli drove in the game-tying run with a double down the left
field line and a Palsi RBI double the following inning broke the
tie and made it 2-1 after six innings of play.
With Hood on the mound, a 2-1 lead may have been safe but the
Crusaders left little room for a Rangers comeback after scoring
four runs in the seventh inning. Luckenbill's bases-loaded
double to left center sent home three of those four runs and Palsi
drove home the fourth and final run of the inning with a single up
the middle that plated Luckenbill.
Two Drew players reached base with one out in the seventh but Hood
retired the final two batters to pick up his seventh win of the
spring.
The second game was a similar story as starting pitcher
Spencer Hotaling (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove
Area) pitched the first six innings, allowing one run
(unearned) on a mere one hit with six strikeouts. Freshman
Liam Conboy (Old Tappan, N.J./Northern
Valley Regional) pitched the seventh and final inning.
The Crusaders scored at least one run in each of the seven
innings. Dylan Jenkins (Glen Mills, Pa./Bayard
Rustin) had three RBI in the win while Ty
Raubenstine (Elizabethville, Pa./Upper Dauphin Area) and
Luckenbill were a combined 6-for-9 at the top of the lineup.
SU got off to a quick start, scoring three runs before Drew had
even come to the plate. The Rangers got back one of those runs in
the bottom of the first for a 3-1 ballgame.
Susquehanna added runs in the second and third innings to lead 5-1
before scoring another three runs in the fourth inning.
Jenkins's double to left center drove home the final two runs
of the inning for an 8-1 SU lead after four.
Runs in the fifth and sixth innings upped the Crusaders'
lead to 10-1 before they broke out for another three-run inning in
the seventh. Mike Rucereto (Washington Twp., N.J./Bergen
Catholic) drove in the first run of the inning before
Ben Miller (Columbia, Md./Hammond) drew a bases
loaded walk that made it 12-1. A wild pitch allowed the third and
final run of the inning to score for a 13-1 lead.
Conboy came in to get the final three outs of the game and did so
by retiring the side in order.
The teams finish up the three-game series on Saturday with first
pitched scheduled for noon.
