Early Runs Lift SU Baseball over Leb Val

Box Score

SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Five runs in the first two innings by the Susquehanna baseball team helped lift the Crusaders to a 6-1 non-conference win over visiting Lebanon Valley on Tuesday afternoon.

SU (23-9) was ahead 5-0 in the bottom of the fourth before a thunderstorm caused a half-hour delay in the action.

When the action resumed, the Dutchmen (18-15) tallied one run in the seventh before the Crusaders tacked on an insurance run in the eighth and held on for the mid-week win, their first against Lebanon Valley since 2005, snapping an 11-game skid and only the third win vs. LVC since 1999.

Bryan Palsi (Brielle, N.J. / Manasquan), Kyle Semmel (Burlington Twp., N.J. / Holy Cross) and Rob Marcickiewicz (Red Bank, N.J. / Middletown South) all led SU with two hits apiece, as the Crusaders outhit the Dutchmen 11-7. Junior Jared Musilli (Branchville, N.J. / High Point Regional) smacked a solo home run in the bottom of the second, his first career long ball.

Freshman Eric Soranno (Watchung, N.J. / Watchung Hills) picked up his fourth win of the year, as the rookie threw six innings of shutout ball, scattering four hits and striking out a pair.

Classmate Brett Newman (Washington Crossing, Pa. / Council Rock North) and senior Matt Smith (Blue Ridge Summit, Pa. / Wyoming Seminary) both appeared out of the bullpen.

SU jumped out to a 3-0 edge after one inning of play with all the runs coming with two outs. With two runners on, Semmel cracked a single to center scoring Dylan Glassmire (Doylestown, Pa. / Central Bucks South). Dylan Jenkins (Glen Mills, Pa. / Bayard Rustin) followed with a two-run double to right center to hand the Crusaders the early lead.

In the bottom of the second, Musilli launched a lead-off homer over the right field fence. Ty Raubenstine (Elizabethville, Pa. / Upper Dauphin Area) would later walk and touch home on a run-scoring single by Glassmire with SU gaining a 5-0 lead.

After the 30-minute rain delay, the Dutchmen ruined the shutout with a solo blast to right by Devin Dellinger. But the Crusaders tacked on a run in the eighth on an RBI single up the middle by Marcickiewicz.

The Crusaders host Wesley on Thursday at 4 p.m. The Wolverines ended SU's school-record 15-game winning streak back on April 1.
