ANNVILLE, Pa. – The Susquehanna softball team dropped a
doubleheader at No. 15 Lebanon Valley on Wednesday afternoon,
losing game one 2-0 before falling in game two 6-0.
Game one was an old-fashioned pitcher's duel as junior
Morgan Lewis (Newtown, Pa. / Council Rock North)
squared off against Sam Derr.
Lewis threw six solid innings, scattering four hits, allowing
one earned run and striking out eight. The righty tallied 106
pitches, throwing 67 for strikes.
SU (19-14) had only four hits in the first game, two off the bat
of junior Bridget Rafter (Highlands, N.J. / Henry Hudson
Regional), who cracked a double to right center in the
second inning.
In the top of the third, Sarah Bush (West Windsor, N.J.
/ West Windsor Plainsboro North) hit a one-out single to
center and was moved to second as Claire Hanratty (Severna
Park, Md. / Severna Park) successfully converted a
sacrifice bunt. But unfortunately, Bush was left stranded on second
base.
The Dutchmen (28-3) got on the board in the bottom of the
fourth, scoring one run on two hits to take a 1-0 edge. Rafter led
off the top of the fifth with a single to center, but again the
Crusaders were left scoreless.
Lebanon Valley tacked on another run in the bottom of the sixth
as Derr led off with a double to center and later touched home on a
throwing miscue by the Crusaders.
SU looked to rally in the top half of the seventh as senior
Sam LaCoe (Clarks Summit, Pa. / Abington Heights)
hit a one-out base knock to left and moved to third on a sac bunt
by Rafter. But the Dutchmen earned the final out and handed the
Crusaders the game one defeat.
In the nightcap, the Crusaders had nine hits against Derr, but
could not register a run and fell 6-0 as Derr improved to 18-0 on
the year.
Rafter and Alyssa Cantalini (Kitchener, Ontario / St.
David Catholic Secondary) both had two hits each as
Cantalini appeared in a game for the first time since March 23 at
Montclair State.
Freshman Jamie Fesinstine (Long Valley, N.J. / West
Morris Central) suffered the defeat as the pitcher went
six innings, throwing 107 pitches (71 for strikes).
Lebanon Valley jumped out to a 3-0 lead after one inning and
added one run in the second through fourth innings. The Crusaders
strung back-to-back singles to begin the top of the second as
Brittany Devlin (Furlong, Pa. / Central Bucks
East) and Cantalini got on base, but neither was able to
score.
Again in the third, Stephanie Chlebove (Northampton, Pa.
/ Northampton Area) and Rafter both got on base with
singles up the middle, but the Dutchmen escaped unscathed.
SU hosts Drew in the final regular season home games of the year
on Saturday. The Crusaders will honor Devlin, LaCoe and
Kylie Schrey (Elizabethville, Pa. / Upper Dauphin
Area) in a pre-game ceremony for Senior Day.
