SELISNGROVE, Pa. – With two wins over Drew University on
Saturday afternoon, the Susquehanna softball team clinched a
perfect record in Landmark Conference play this season, finishing
12-0 to become the first team since Moravian in 2008 to go
undefeated in league action.
SU (21-14, 12-0) defeated the Rangers (18-16, 3-9) 6-2, 4-3 on a
day in which the team also celebrated Senior Day. Susquehanna,
which had already clinched the No. 1 seed in the upcoming Landmark
Conference Tournament, will host the tournament on May 2-3.
The Crusaders broke out for four runs in the first inning of game
one and never looked back en route to the 6-2 victory. Senior
Brittany Devlin (Furlong, Pa./Central Bucks East)
went 1-for-1 with one RBI with that lone RBI placing her in a tie
for the most all-time in Susquehanna history with 83.
Brianna Murphy (Hazlet, N.J./Mater Dei Prep) was
2-for-4 with two runs scored and Bridget Rafter (Highlands,
N.J./Henry Hudson Regional) drove in two runs on one hit
while scoring another.
Morgan Lewis (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North)
tossed a complete game, scattering six hits over her seven innings
of work with 10 strikeouts and just one walk as she picked up her
11th win of the spring.
In the bottom of the first, Steph Chlebove (Northampton,
Pa./Northampton Area) scored on aMurphy's steal of
second base and Rafter drove in two runs on a double to center
field. Devlin drove home the fourth run of the inning with a double
down the left field line for a 4-0 ballgame.
The Crusaders added two more runs in the fifth inning, the first
scoring on Sarah Bush's (West Windsor, N.J./West
Windsor Plainsboro North) RBI double to right field and
the second run of the inning scoring on a passed ball.
Drew did plate solo runs in the sixth and seventh innings but
Lewis got Phylicia Pellot to hit into a fielder's choice with
a runner on first base to end the game.
Game two was more of a pitchers' duel with Jamie
Fesinstine (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central0
grinding out the win, her 10th of the spring. The
freshman pitched all seven innings and gave up three runs (two
earned) on six hits with four strikeouts.
At the plate, Bush added two more hits and drove in three runs and
Claire Hanratty (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park)
was 1-for-2 with one RBI.
The Rangers struck first with a run in the top of the first inning
but in the bottom of the second, the Crusaders plated three runs to
take their first lead of the game. Bush drove in the first two runs
of the inning with a double to center field and Hanratty followed
with a single to left field that scored Bush for a 3-1 Susquehanna
lead.
The Rangers responded with two runs in the top of the very next
inning, though, to tie the game at three.
Bush broke that tie in the bottom of the fourth with a RBI
groundout to shortstop that scored pinch runner Cierra
Omlor (Salem, N.J./Salem).
Fesinstine remained in the game and retired the side in order in
the fifth and seventh innings to preserve SU's perfect
conference record.
The Crusaders remain at home to host York (Pa.) on April 29 with a
doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
