SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Despite jumping out to an early lead,
the Susquehanna men's lacrosse team could not hang on and
fell to Landmark Conference foe Goucher 13-7 on Saturday
afternoon.
The Crusaders (6-6, 2-1 Landmark) notched a goal at the 8:12
mark of the first quarter off the stick of Austen Lein (New
Vernon, N.J. / Madison), but unfortunately, were outscored
by the Gophers (5-5, 3-1) 6-1 until a score by Conor
Boyland (Long Valley, N.J. / West Morris Central) cut the
deficit to 6-2, which stood at halftime.
Goucher began the second half of play by scoring six unanswered
goals to put SU into a 12-2 hole. But back-to-back man-up goals by
senior Pat Brogan (Lancaster, Pa. / Hempfield) cut
the Goucher lead down to 12-4 entering the fourth period.
Lein scored less than 20 seconds into the final quarter to get
the Crusaders within seven (12-5) but the Gophers answered with a
scored at 9:57 to take a 13-5 advantage. Junior Carmen
Raroha (Voorhees, N.J. / Bishop Eustace) notched an
unassisted goal with less than four minutes to go and J.A.
Howland (Lititz, Pa. / Warwick) found the back of the net
with 2:30 remaining but time ran out on SU as the Crusaders dropped
their first league game of the season.
Lein finished with four points on the afternoon and Brogan
followed with three to lead the offensive attack. Freshman
Jonathan Berg (Chester, N.J. / Mendham) suffered
the defeat as the rookie play more than 37 minutes, facing 21 shots
and recording 11 saves.
Junior Jared Knowlton (North Salem, N.Y. / Kent
School) relieved Berg in the third quarter and made seven
stops while facing 10 shots.
SU remains at home to host Marywood for a non-conference contest
on Wednesday, April 5 at 4 p.m.
