BETHLEHEM, Pa. – What was supposed to be two seven-inning
baseball games turned into a combined 22 innings of play between
Susquehanna and Moravian and unfortunately for the Crusaders, they
were on the non-winning side of both decisions.
The Crusaders (15-6, 6-2) fell 5-4 in 10 innings in the series
opener before dropping a 3-2, 12-inning decision in the nightcap on
Saturday.
In the series opener, SU had just seven hits with two from
Dylan Jenkins (Glen Mills, Pa./Bayard Rustin), who
also scored a run. Starting pitcher Luc Kocher (Middlebury
Center, Pa./Elkland) lasted the first five innings and
gave up three runs on six hits. Eric Soranno (Watchung,
N.J./Watchung Hills) came on in relief for the next 1.1
innings and surrendered one run. A.J. Pinto (Bronxville,
N.Y./Fordham Prep) threw the final three innings and
ultimately got credit for the loss as the only run he gave up was
the game winner in the 10th.
The Greyhounds led 2-0 after four innings thanks to runs in the
first and fourth innings. However, SU broke out for a four-run
fifth inning when Jared Musilli (Branchville, N.J./High
Point Regional), Nick Kennedy (Brookeville,
Md./Good Council) and Ty Raubentstine
(Elizabethville, Pa./Upper Dauphin Area) all came up with
RBI hits. A Greyhound error accounted for the fourth run in the
inning to put Susquehanna ahead 4-2.
Moravian, however, added solo runs in both the fifth and sixth
innings and both teams left at least one runner stranded in the
seventh inning to send the game to extras.
The Crusaders' Taylor Luckenbill (Pottsville,
Pa./Nativity BVM) was left stranded on first in the
10th before the Greyhounds' Daniel
Seitzinger's one-out bunt single allowed Justin Pilchman to
score the game-winning run which was unearned after a Crusader
throwing error had allowed Pilchman to reach base earlier in the
inning.
In the second game, the SU pitchers held Moravian (18-4, 9-1) to
just six hits but had only eight hits of its own, three of which
came from Luckenbill. Kyle Semmel (Burlington Twp.,
N.J./Holy Cross) and Jenkins had two hits apiece with
Semmel also scoring a run.
Starter Casey Hood (Shrewsbury,
Pa./Susquehannock) lasted 5.2 innings and gave up just two
runs on three hits. Matt Smith (Blue Ridge Summit,
Pa./Wyoming Seminary) tossed a scoreless 3.1 innings
before giving way to Bobby Wittemann (Warrington,
Pa./Central Bucks South), who went the final 1.1 and was
credited with the loss.
Moravian led 1-0 until the top of the fifth when Dylan
Glassmire's (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks South)
single up the middle allowed Luckenbill to score after he'd
reached base on a one-out single.
Both teams added runs in their respective halves of the sixth
inning and each side was retired in order in the seventh to force
the second extra-inning game of the day.
SU pitchers stranded two Moravian runners in both the eighth and
10th innings and the Crusaders went down in order in the
top of the 12th.
In the bottom of the 12th, the Greyhounds put their
first two runners on base and a wild pitch sent runners to second
and third with one out. Moravian's Ryan Luke then popped a
ball up to the second baseman down the right field line that was
deep enough to allow Anthony Gaetaniello to score the game-winning
run.
The teams conclude their series on Sunday with a nine-inning game
with first pitch at noon.
