WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Susquehanna softball team remained
undefeated in Landmark Conference play thanks to a doubleheader
sweep of Catholic on Saturday afternoon in Washington, D.C.
The Crusaders (9-9, 4-0) won game one 5-3 before taking the second
game by a 3-1 score over the Cardinals (11-10, 1-3).
Shortstop Sam LaCoe (Clarks Summit, Pa./Abington
Heights) finished the day 4-for-6 with three runs scored
and two RBI. Leadoff hitter Amanda Neveroski (Toms River,
N.J./Toms River North) was 4-for-7, thanks in part to a
3-for-3 performance in game one.
Game one starter Morgan Lewis (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock
North) went the distance, giving up just three runs on 10
hits with eight strikeouts and just one walk.
The Crusaders did not waste much time taking a lead as they plated
two runs in the top of the first inning thanks to a Bridget
Rafter (Highlands, N.J./Henry Hudson Regional) RBI single
to center that scored Neveroski and LaCoe.
It remained a 2-0 game until the top of the fourth when SU broke
out for three more runs, two of which scored on a two-run homer
from Neveroski. LaCoe accounted for the third run of the inning
with a solo shot that made it 5-0.
Lewis ran into some trouble in the bottom of the sixth when she
gave up two runs on four hits but she did strand a runner and
Susquehanna maintained a three-run lead (5-2).
In the bottom of the seventh, Lewis surrendered a two-out RBI
single for a 5-3 game but got Rose Shaver to ground out to end the
game and preserve SU's victory.
Game two was another tight game with starting pitcher
Jamie Fesinstine (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris
Central) throwing a complete game. The freshman scattered
one run and 11 hits over her seven innings of work and had five
strikeouts to two walks.
Just like in game one, Susquehanna put two runs on the board in
the top of the first inning on RBI hits from LaCoe and Rafter.
The Cardinals added a run in the bottom half of the second but
Fesinstine got Rebekah Hoisl to pop up with the bases loaded to
keep it a 2-1 ballgame.
The Crusaders tacked on an insurance run in the top of the fourth
when Claire Hanratty's (Severna Park, Md./Severna
Park) single up the middle scored Cierra Omlor
(Salem, N.J./Salem), who had entered the game as a pinch
runner.
Catholic put two runners on base in the sixth but Fesinstine
worked out of trouble in that inning and proceeded to retire the
Cardinals in order in the seventh to complete the doubleheader
sweep for SU.
SU has a quick turnaround as the team travels to Elizabethtown on
Sunday for a makeup Landmark Conference doubleheader beginning at 1
p.m.
