WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – A doubleheader sweep on Wednesday extended the Susquehanna softball team's win streak to six games as SU took down Lycoming in Williamsport.
The Crusaders (13-9) picked up a 5-2, game one victory before breaking out for an 11-1, six-inning victory in the nightcap. Wednesday marked the team's annual Cancer Awareness Cup.
SU pitchers held the Warriors to three runs and just 11 hits over the two games. Morgan Lewis (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North) started the opening game and went all seven innings, allowing only two runs on just five hits while racking up nine strikeouts.
In that game, Sarah Bush (West Windsor, N.J./West Windsor Plainsboro North) and Lauren Creamer (Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy) each had two hits and leadoff hitter Amanda Neveroski (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) drove in two runs.
Lycoming went ahead 1-0 in the bottom of the second but Susquehanna plated three runs in its half of the fourth inning. Bush drove in the inning's second run and Creamer's double to right center allowed Brittany Devlin (Furlong, Pa./Central Bucks East) to score the inning's third and final run for a 3-1 SU lead.
Susquehanna added two more runs in the sixth, both of which scored on Neveroski's single to left field.
The Warriors were able to get back one of those runs in their half of the seventh but Lewis retired the final two batters of the inning to clinch the victory for her team.
Game two was an offensive outburst for the Crusaders as they scored 11 runs on 13 hits. Neveroski was 3-for-4 with one home run, three runs scored and two more RBI. Bush had three hits and a game-high three RBI.
Game two starter Jamie Fesinstine (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central) gave up only one run while scattering six hits and five strikeouts over her six innings of work.
The Crusaders scored at least one run in all but the third inning and they opened the game with a two-run first inning with Sam LaCoe (Clarks Summit, Pa./Abington Heights) and Bridget Rafter (Highlands, N.J./Henry Hudson Regional) each driving in a run. Sam Zuponcic (Mantua, Ohio/Crestwood/Hiram) drove in another run in the second inning to up her team's lead to 3-0.
While the Warriors scored a run in their half of the second inning, Neveroski's solo home run in the fourth inning made it a 4-1 game and a two-run fifth inning put Susquehanna ahead 6-1.
The Crusaders put the game out of reach thanks to a five-run sixth inning. Neveroski added a triple and Stephanie Chlebove (Northampton, Pa./Northampton Area), Devlin and Bush all had RBIs to give Susquehanna an 11-1 run lead.
