Box Score WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - The Susquehanna women's soccer team tied King's (Pa.) 1-1 after a hard-fought, double overtime match on Saturday night in its season opener.
The SU (0-0-1) side featured eight players making their collegiate debuts, but a goal from senior Samantha Zuponcic (Mantua, Ohio / Crestwood / Hiram) proved the difference maker in the match. The forward found the back of the net in the 79th minute from a corner kick by Alex Edelman (Voorhees, N.J. / Eastern Regional), who was credited with the assist.
Freshman Chloe Eisenhuth (Watsontown, Pa. / Warrior Run) registered two shots on goal in the early minutes, but Kristen Jacob of King's (Pa.) struck first, scoring just before the close of the first half. In the second period, the Crusaders came out on the attack with a shot from Rachel Moyer (Hellertown, Pa. / Saucon Valley) that was turned away by keeper Jessica Natale, who finished with seven saves.
A shot from Kate Wiley (Sellersville, Pa. / Pennridge) almost tied the game in the 65th minute, but met the crossbar and left SU scoreless. After Zuponcic's equalizer, the Crusaders nearly put the game away when Alyssa Bolger (Stanhope, N.J. / Pope John Regional) had two shots saved by Natale in quick succession. On the other end, SU goalkeeper Jordyn Slocum made one of her four saves in the 88th minute to help send the game into overtime.
In the additional period, the Crusaders registered the only shot on net, which came from freshman Mairead Ruane (Marywood, N.J. / Paramus Catholic).
The team plays again on Tuesday, Sept. 2 at home against Lycoming in the River Derby Classic.
