Box Score SELINSGROVE, PA - The Susquehanna women's soccer team was blanked in its third consecutive match on Wednesday night, falling 2-0 at home to Alvernia (3-3-0).
The Crusaders (1-3-1) fell behind early, conceding a goal in the 12th minute after Shannon Browne beat goalkeeper Jordyn Slocum (Eagleville, Pa. / Methacton), who came off her line to play the ball.
SU had two chances to equalize in the 26th minute when a shot from Samantha Zuponcic (Mantua, Ohio / Crestwood / Hiram) was redirected into the right post and a Kate Wiley (Sellersville, Pa. / Pennridge) shot off the rebound also found the woodwork.
Susquehanna was held without a shot for the remainder of the first half, but came out of the break with a renewed attack as Wiley challenged Alvernia keeper Jessica Plunkett to make a save in the 47th minute. On the other end, Slocum made three stops in three minutes to keep the game at 1-0.
The visitors broke through at 63:17 when Kristen Eckert drove a hard ball from outside the box into the top left corner of the net. Alvernia nearly expanded its lead to 3-0 a minute later, but an apparent goal was disallowed after an offside call.
SU had opportunities to score in the waning minutes of the contest, but a header from Chloe Eisenhuth (Watsontown, Pa. / Warrior Run) sailed wide and Wiley's shot at 81:52 was corralled by Plunkett.
Both teams finished with eight total shots apiece, but Alvernia held a 6-3 advantage in shots on goal.
Susquehanna has another home, non-conference game on Saturday, Sept. 13 when it hosts Westminster (Pa.) at 5:30 p.m.
