Crusaders Open Landmark Play with 4-0 Loss to Scranton

Box Score

SELINSGROVE, Pa. – The Susquehanna women's soccer team began conference play with a 4-0 defeat to Scranton on Saturday afternoon. Four different players scored for the Royals with three goals coming in the second half.

Susquehanna had perhaps its best chance to score early on in the game when an Alex Edelman (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional) corner kick in the 15th minute resulted in a shot on goal by Rachel Moyer (Hellertown, Pa./Saucon Valley), but was saved and cleared away by a Scranton defender.

The game remained tight until the visitors broke through with a goal by Erin Allen, who received a right-side pass from Michael Arbus and beat keeper Jennifer Thorsheim (Manalapan, N.J./Freehold Township) at close range. Thorsheim finished with 10 saves in the loss, while Scranton goalies Krissy Welsh and Kristen McShane combined for the shutout.

In the second half, Scranton put the game away with two goals in less than five minutes as Christina Akalski and Sarah Andrews both found the back of the net to expand the lead to 3-0. A goal from Katie O'Hanlon at 73:30 capped the scoring for the visiting Royals.

SU was held to two shots, both of which came in the first half, despite holding a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks.

The Crusaders host non-conference opponent Gettysburg at Sassafras Field on Wednesday, Oct.1 at 7:00 p.m.
