Box Score DALLAS, Pa. - Despite the best efforts of goalkeeper Jordyn Slocum (Eagleville, Pa. / Methacton), the Susquehanna women's soccer team (1-2-1) was unable to beat nationally-ranked Misericordia as it suffered a 2-0 defeat to the Cougars on Tuesday night.
In 90 minutes, Slocum turned away 19 shots, including 10 in the first half, and put her name in the program record books for saves in a single game. She is tied for first with Megan Steese '07, who recorded 19 stops on Sept. 30, 2006 during a 1-0, double-overtime loss to Widener. The current Landmark Conference best for saves in a game is 22, set by Goucher's Kellen Matthews against SU in 2007.
The sophomore keeper was put to the test early and often, facing 38 total shots on the evening, which included two on net in the opening six minutes. The longest time between shots faced was just under eight minutes and the Cougars recorded six shots from the 50th to the 54th minute.
Unfortunately, Slocum was unable to stop everything that came her way and the Crusaders fell behind 1-0 in the 30th minute after Alex Gallagher found the back left of the net. Erin McGreal added an insurance goal quickly after halftime, scoring less than three minutes into the second period.
The Crusaders were held without a shot until late in the game, but continued to fight and forced Misericordia goalie Maureen Ciccosanti to save shots from freshmen Cassandra Coombs (Whitehouse Station, N.J. / Hunterdon Central Regional) and Grayclyn Juckes (Bloomsburg, Pa. / Central Columbia) around the 80-minute mark.
The women's soccer team will play for the third time in five days when it returns to Sassafras Field on Wednesday, Sept. 10. The Crusaders host non-conference foe Alvernia in a game set for 7:00 p.m.
