SELINSGROVE, Pa. – The Susquehanna women's swimming & diving team remained perfect in Landmark Conference competition with victories over Marywood and Juniata on Saturday afternoon. The Crusaders topped Marywood, 182-89, and beat Juniata 200-55.
SU took first and second place in every non-exhibition event in its first competition of the New Year. The team began the afternoon with a victory in the 200 medley relay as the team of Annie Bruxelles (Hockessin, Del./Sanford School), Joann Butkus (Barnesville, Pa./Tamaqua Area), Ashlee Weingarten (Hackettstown, N.J./Hackettstown), and Jessica Jozefiak (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks East) finished in 1:52.82.
In the 1000 free, Lindsey Vankirk (Washington, N.J./Warren Hills) and Morgan Sattler (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks East) finished first and second with respective times of 11:45.72 and 11:55.55.
The Crusaders also took the top three spots in the 200 free with Lexi Cole (Danville, Pa./Danville) finishing in 2:00.09, followed by Caroline Henderson (Berkeley Heights, N.J./Governor Livingston) at 2:04.86 and Kyle Seaman (Moreland Hills, Ohio/Orange) with a time of 2:05.04.
SU later swept the top three in the 100 back as Bruxelles, Erin McElwee (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville Area) and Avanti Banks (East Stroudsburg, Pa./Stroudsburg) posted respective times of 1:02.14, 1:04.43 and 1:05.83. The mark was also a new personal-best for Banks by six-one hundredths of a second.
It was more of the same in 100 breast as Butkus, Alex Bornman (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) and Paige Wagner (Rising Sun, Md./Rising Sun) placed first through third in 1:09.54, 1:12.36 and 1:13.26, respectively. Dana Linsky (Bethlehem, Pa./Saucon Valley), who finished fifth in the event, also set a PR with her time of 1:16.00.
In the 200 fly, the Crusaders occupied the top four spots with Kelsey Lessard (Chestertown, Md./Queen Anne's County) (2:19.86), Madeline Toohey (Oradell, N.J./River Dell) (2:27.46), Michelle Skroupa (West Friendship, Md./Glenelg) (2:30.00) and Dana Pontecorvo (New Providence, N.J./Mount St. Mary Academy) (2:32.63) finishing in that order.
The 50 free featured a tie for first between Weingarten and Jozefiak in 26.18, which was also a personal best for Jozefiak. The freshman followed that win with another individual victory and PR in the 100 free (56.87). Seaman (57.04) and Bruxelles (57.57) were not far behind as the Crusaders swept the top three.
SU also claimed the top four spots in the 200 back behind performances from Cole (2:15.83), McElwee (2:17.92), Maggie Hess (Wolfeboro, N.H./Brewston Academy) (2:21.67) and Skroupa (2:28.58). Hess' time was also a new personal-best by nearly seven seconds.
Butkus also set a new PR in the 200 breast with her time of 2:34.94 and was followed by Wagner in 2:39.97. Meanwhile, Henderson claimed second in the 500 free with her time of 5:46.09. In the last non-exhibition event of the afternoon, the Crusaders claimed the top four spots in the 100 fly with Weingarten (1:01.38), Seaman (1:03.46), Lizzie Richart (Wyncote, Pa./Cheltenham) (1:03.74) and Banks (1:04.53) finishing in that order.
Divers Desiree Muldoon (Ithaca, N.Y./Dryden) and Rachael Wood (Shippensburg, Pa./Shippensburg Area) also picked up points for the Crusaders in the one-meter event.
SU next competes at non-conference opponent Franklin & Marshall on Saturday, Jan. 17. The meet is scheduled for 1 p.m.
