Box Score SELINSGROVE, Pa. – The Susquehanna women's basketball team jumped out to a 3-0 lead on its very first possession of the game and never looked back in a 74-56 home win against Drew University.
SU improves to 12-3 overall with a 6-1 record in Landmark action and a 7-0 mark at home. The team's 12 victories match the win total from the entire 2013-14 campaign.
It was a well-rounded effort from the entire Crusader team with six players scoring at least six points. Jonaida Williams (Williamsport, Pa./Loyalsock Twp.) led the way with 17 points to complement her five rebounds and three assists. Courtney Adams (Hamilton, N.J./Hamilton West) poured in 16 points off the bench and also had six boards. Nikki Komara (Shamokin, Pa./Lourdes) put up stats across the board, tallying 15 points, nine rebounds, three assists and six steals.
Nicole Gault (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) led all players with her 11 rebounds the Crusaders held a decisive 40-27 edge over the Rangers (8-8, 3-5) in total rebounds.
The depth of the SU bench also proved too much for Drew as the Crusaders scored 22 of their 74 points off the bench. The Rangers, meanwhile, had just two bench points.
Komara began the game's scoring with a three to spark a 15-2 game-opening run. A layup from Adams at the midway point of the half helped SU maintain an 18-9 lead and three minutes later, Angie Schedler's (Alexandria, Va./T.C. Williams) three put the Crusaders in the lead by 12 (21-9).
The teams traded buckets for the next several minutes and Drew got within nine, 30-21, on a Hannah Miller three with just 1:49 left to play.
Williams' layup made it a 32-21 game but the Rangers capped off the half with 10 unanswered points and it was suddenly just a four-point game (32-28) at the half.
Drew remained within five, 39-34, after two minutes of play in the second half and Millers' three at the 15-minute mark made the score 43-39, still in favor of SU. The Rangers' Courtney Stephens connected on one of two free throws with 13:51 to play to trim Susquehanna's lead to just three (43-40).
The Crusaders promptly responded by going on an 8-0 run to take a 51-40 lead at the 12-minute mark. The SU defense then shut out Drew for a five-minute stretch while building a 19-point lead (66-57) with just 5:35 to play.
Drew's Breana Wilson connected on a three-point play to make it 72-56 but with just 1:08 remaining, SU's lead was safe.
The Crusaders remain at home to host Goucher on Jan. 21 at 7 p.m.
