Women's Hoops Remains Perfect at Home

Box Score

With a 65-50 win over Goucher on Wednesday evening, the Susquehanna women's basketball team improved to 8-0 at home and 13-3 overall.

It was the team's 10th win in the last 11 games and the fourth consecutive double-digit victory.

Jonaida Williams (Williamsport, Pa./Loyalsock Twp.) led the team with four steals and 18 points, including 13 in the second half, and both Sofia Schedler (Alexandria, Va./TC Williams) and Angie Schedler (Alexandria, Va./TC Williams) finished in double figures with 12 and 15 points, respectively.

Sofia Schedler and Nikki Komara (Shamokin, Pa./Lourdes Regional) tied for the team lead with six assists apiece and as SU finished with 17 assists on 21 made baskets.

Goucher (4-12, 0-8) held an early lead with 10 minutes remaining in the first half but its 19 turnovers helped SU take the lead for good. Although the Crusaders had early trouble against Gophers' zone defense, it used ball movement to find open looks from deep, led by Angie Schedler's 12 points on four three-pointers.

SU held a double-digit lead at 37-26 with just under 30 seconds remaining in the first half and a coast-to-coast layup by Komara right before time expired gave the Crusaders a 39-28 lead at the break.

Spurred by nine points from Williams, Susquehanna opened the second half on an 11-0 run and began to put the game out of Goucher's reach. Another three-pointer by Angie Schedler with 6:44 left put SU ahead 61-37, its largest lead of the game, but the Gophers fought back and answered with nine points of their own.

It was, however, too little too late and the Crusaders scored the last points of the game to preserve the 65-50 victory.

SU, which ranks 17th in Division III in three-point field goal defense, limited the Gophers to 2-of-8 shooting from downtown for a 25 percent mark. The Crusaders' defense also forced 26 turnovers, its highest total of the season.

With its three-game homestand at an end, the team hits the road to compete at Elizabethtown on Saturday, Jan. 24. The opening tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
