Crusaders Sweep Season Series with Catholic

Box Score

WASHINGTON, D.C. – With its 76-62 road win over Catholic on Wednesday evening, the Susquehanna women's basketball team (14-4, 8-2) swept the season series against Catholic for the first time since the 2008-09 season and gained sole possession of second place in the Landmark Conference standings.

Catholic (13-6, 7-3) led for only one minute in the entire contest when it held a narrow, one-point margin early in the game. Susquehanna, one of the top teams in the Division III for three-point defense, held its opponent to zero makes from beyond the arc for the third time this season.

Nikki Komara (Shamokin, Pa./Lourdes Regional) and Jonaida Williams (Williamsport, Pa./Loyalsock Twp.) shared the team-high in scoring with 21 points apiece and were a combined 13-of-16 from the line. Komara also added 10 rebounds and five assists while Williams had a full stat line with four rebounds, four steals, three assists and a block.

Courtney Adams (Hamilton, N.J./Hamilton West) was extremely productive in 14 minutes off the bench, finishing with 16 points, seven rebounds and one block.

The Cardinals gained an early, 3-2 lead less than five minutes into the game but a 10-0 Crusader run put SU ahead 12-3 with 8:21 remaining in the first half. Although Catholic was able to pull within four, SU answered with seven consecutive points, including four from Williams, to regain its double-digit lead.

CUA took advantage of its 17 trips to the charity stripe in the half by sinking 12 free throws, compared to SU's 6-of-9 of mark. Nevertheless, the Crusaders maintained their lead behind a strong defense that limited the Cardinals to 6-of-35 from the field, including 0-of-11 from beyond the arc, and carried a 35-24 advantage into the break.

In the second half, Catholic scored 10 of the first 14 points to shrink SU's lead to five, 39-34. Once again, the Crusaders had an answer with a 10-2 run behind four points from Adams. Susquehanna held its largest lead of the game, 57-40, with 10:32 in regulation after a trey from Williams.

CUA was able to trim its deficit to single digits, 69-60, with 2:56 remaining but seven straight points by SU down the stretch put the game out of reach.

The Crusaders out-rebounded the Cardinals 46-47, despite giving up 17 rebounds on the offensive glass.

Susquehanna has its last non-conference game of the regular season when it hosts Alvernia on Saturday, Jan. 31 at 3 p.m. for Girl Scout Day.
