Box Score SELINSGROVE, Pa. – The final non-conference game of the regular season for the Susquehanna women's basketball team was a victory as SU got past visiting Alvernia 64-54 on Saturday afternoon. With the win, SU remains a perfect 9-0 at home.
The Crusaders have won six of their previous seven games to stand at 15-4 overall heading into the final stretch of Landmark Conference play.
Jonaida Williams (Williamsport, Pa./Loyalsock Twp.) led all players with 18 points to go along with three steals, two assists and five rebounds. Angie Schedler (Alexandria, Va./T.C. Williams) finished with 16 points off the bench, 12 of which were from beyond the arc.
The SU bench played a key role in the win as the Crusaders bench contributed 23 points to just seven from Alvernia (6-13).
Nikki Komara (Shamokin, Pa./Lourdes Regional) added 15 points and a team-best eight boards in her 35 minutes of play.
Alvernia opened the game on a 10-4 run over just three minutes of play. A layup from Lexi Biggs-Garcia (McLean, Va./Langley) at the 12:26 mark closed the gap to two (12-10) and Williams' trey 90 seconds later made it a 14-13 contest.
Courtney Adams' (Hamilton, N.J./Hamilton West) free throw tied the game at 14 and Angie Schedler's (Alexandria, Va./T.C. Williams) layup with 9:34 remaining in the half put SU ahead 16-14.
It was a lead the team would not relinquish. Another Williams three with 3:10 remaining gave Susquehanna a six-point edge (26-20) and a three-point play by Komara just one minute later handed the Crusaders their first double-digit lead of the afternoon (31-21).
By the time the half came to a close, SU took a 33-25 edge into the locker room.
Alvernia trimmed the lead to five, 38-33, after four minutes of play in the second half. The Crusaders responded with an 11-2 run to pull ahead by 14, 49-35, just inside the halfway point of the period.
Twice Alvernia was able to cut the lead to single digits but never pulled closer than eight points and Williams' three-point play with 1:15 remaining essentially sealed the SU victory.
Susquehanna hits the road to face Juniata on Wednesday, Feb. 4 at 7 p.m.
