Volleyball Wins Two on the Road

ST. DAVIDS, Pa. – The Susquehanna volleyball team won two matches at the Eastern Quad Match on Saturday afternoon.

The first match of the day for Susquehanna (22-9) saw the team facing the Ospreys (25-4) of Stockton University which SU won in straight sets (25-23, 25-16, 26-24).

In the first set of the match, the score was tied four times until Morgan Whiteman got a kill to take the lead 5-4. The Crusaders held the lead until the game was tied once again at 16-16 and both teams traded points back and forth until 19-19 when one again Whiteman broke the tie to put SU up 20-19. Susquehanna held the lead and won the set 25-23.

Stockton led early in the second set when an Osprey attacking error tied the game at 5-5 and a Leana Carvin kill gave SU the lead at 6-5 at which point the Crusaders took the lead and never looked back, winning 25-16.

The third set started with the Crusaders down 10-4 but SU proceeded to go on a 10-4 run to tie the set at 14-14. The Ospreys were determined and went ahead 20-16 before a kill by Erin Byrne switched the momentum in the Crusaders favor and SU then tied the game at 20-20. Stockton went up 24-23 on a SU attacking error but a Stockton service error tied once again at 24-24. An attacking error by the Ospreys followed by a Tara Mahoney kill ended the set in the Crusaders' favor 26-24.

Susquehanna was led in kills by Byrne and Carvin who totaled 13 and 10, respectively. Maggie O'Hearn tallied 35 assists and Sarah Paluck contributed 14 digs.

The second match for the Crusaders had the playing Swarthmore College (18-6) and winning in straight sets (25-21, 25-17, 25-23).

The first set of the match both teams traded points back and forth until 18-18 when SU took the final lead and won 25-21. The second set was tied 15-15 until SU went on a 10-1 run and ended the set at 25-16. The third set was similar to the forth where both teams traded points but it ultimately came out in the Crusaders favor with a 25-21 win.

The Crusaders were led on offense by Whiteman who tallied 16 kills. O'Hearn totaled 29 assists while Paluck and Alyssa Chiodo led in digs with nine each.

Susquehanna returns to action on Friday, Oct. 30 when the team hosts Cortland State for a 6:00 p.m. match.
