Box Score TOWSON, Md. – It came down to a shootout between the Susquehanna and Goucher field hockey teams and it was SU that proved triumphant, defeating the Gophers 2-1.
The Crusaders connected on two of their four penalty strokes while Goucher (10-6, 2-5) missed all four of its attempts to give SU the win in the team's final game of the season. Susquehanna finished the season with an 11-5 record, including a 4-3 mark in Landmark games. The 11 victories are the most since SU went 12-7 in 2010.
Erin Bonafede scored the team's lone goal in regulation and the Crusaders' offense fired off 34 shots over the course of the game. Katherine Millett led all players with her 12 shots and was one of six players to finish with at least one shot in the game.
Goalie Alyssa Rothman came up with 16 saves in her 100 minutes of work, including two critical stops in the second overtime period.
Bonafede's unassisted score came at the 21:17 mark after she pushed it past Goucher goalie Demie Huffman following Huffman's save just seconds earlier.
That goal marked the lone score of the first half before, roughly 20 minutes into the second half, the Gophers' Lizzie Barminski scored following a penalty corner that knotted the game at one.
It remained 1-1 thanks in part to Rothman's save with two minutes left in regulation and Emily Jewell's shot with 1:26 to play that went wide, ultimately sending the contest into overtime.
In the two overtime periods, SU clearly had control of the offense with a combined 15 shots. Lauren Cram's penalty stroke at the 82:28 mark was saved and with 34 seconds left in the second and final overtime, Millett's shot was blocked, forcing a shootout to determine the winner.
After missing the first two shots, SU's Cayla Spatz and Taylor Franco connected on the next two attempts while Goucher missed all four of its attempts, handing SU the victory.
