Box Score SELINSGROVE, Pa. – The Susquehanna women's basketball team extended its win streak to three games with a 78-67 home win over Lycoming to close out the opening month of the season.
The score was tied three times but the lead changed hands just once as Susquehanna held off a persistent Warriors team. The Crusaders (4-1) are now off to their best start since 2008-09 when they opened the season with six-straight wins.
Four players reached double figures for SU, led by Angie Schedler's career-high 33 points, 18 of which came from beyond the arc. The sophomore also added three rebounds and three assists.
Nicole Gault added 12 points and Lexi Biggs-Garcia and Nikki Komara had 10 points apiece. Biggs-Garcia led the team with nine rebounds while Komara had a game-high eight assist and seven steals.
The teams swapped buckets for the opening possessions before a three from Schedler made it 7-4 90 seconds into the action. Another Schedler trey pushed it to 12-7 at the 6:40 mark and it became a six-point SU lead (21-15) on Komara's three with 2:53 remaining in the opening quarter.
That bucket was part of a 13-0 run to end the half that put the Crusaders ahead 29-15.
The second quarter was a different story as Susquehanna put just 10 points on the board. Two Chelsea Henderson free throws with 2:08 to play in the first half knotted the game at 34 before Biggs-Garcia and Schedler combined to score the final five points of the opening half and give SU a 39-34 halftime advantage.
The Warriors (3-3) remained within two (43-41) in the early minutes of the third quarter before Komara's layup upped her team's lead to nine (52-43) at the midway point of the period. Schedler's layup at the two-minute mark put SU up by 11, 58-47, and the Crusaders ultimately went into the final 10 minutes of the game holding a 58-50 lead.
Lycoming opened the final quarter on an 11-4 run for a 62-61 ballgame with 6:32 still to play. It remained a two-point game, 67-65, four minutes later before the Warriors were forced to foul down the stretch. Susquehanna sank six free throws in the final 1:02 of play to seal the 78-67 victory.
SU hits the road to open Landmark Conference play on Dec. 2 at Catholic. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
