Women Battle Catholic in Conference Opener

Box Score

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Susquehanna women's basketball team held a five-point, fourth-quarter lead against a Catholic team picked to win the Landmark Conference but ultimately came up just short, falling 57-49 in a road contest Wednesday night.

The teams traded buckets in the first quarter, with neither squad going ahead by more than three points. Angie Schedler's layup at the 1:47 mark put SU ahead 11-10 before Payton Smith's layup 30 seconds later made it a 12-11 Catholic lead, which remained the score at the end of the quarter.

The Cardinals led 13-11 90 seconds into the second quarter but more than three minutes elapsed without another point for either team. Sofie Schedler's layup with 5:11 on the clock knotted the game at 13 before Catholic went on a 14-0 run to pull ahead 27-13 inside the one-minute mark.

Two Sofie Schedler free throws with 50 seconds on the clock marked the final points of the half and SU went into halftime down 27-15.

The Crusaders opened the half on a 10-2 run to trim the lead to four (29-25) with 6:49 still left in the third quarter. Nikki Komara's jumper at the 2:46 mark made it just a two-point game, 33-31, and it remained a two-point Catholic margin (37-35) heading into the final quarter of play.

Angie Schedler tied the game at 37 with a layup just 18 seconds into the fourth period and she connected on a three-pointer just 40 seconds later to put her team ahead, 40-37. Susquehanna's lead increased to six (45-39) on a Sofie Schedler try at the 6:45 mark.

Two Angie Schedler free throws kept SU ahead by five, 49-44, before Catholic countered with a 7-0 run to pull ahead 51-49 with 3:27 to play.

With the Cardinals still ahead by four (53-49) as the game approached the one-minute mark, the Crusaders were forced to foul. Unfortunately, Catholic connected on four free throws in that final minute while SU missed on its final five shots.

Angie Schedler led the team with 19 points and Sofie Schedler added 10. Komara added six points and a team-high 12 boards – four of which were offensive – to go along with seven assists.

Susquehanna remains on the road to face USMMA on Saturday, Dec. 5 at 4 p.m.
