Another Tournament Championship for Perfect Men's Squad

Box Score

READING, Pa. – The No. 17 Susquehanna men's basketball team closed out 2015 with a perfect 11-0 start to the season, defeating Albright 62-60 in the championship game of Wednesday's Crowne Plaza Holiday Tournament. SU has now won all three tournaments in which it has played this year.

The Crusaders held off a resilient Albright team which never let SU take a double-digit lead and forced eight lead changes.

Tyler Hoagland's last-second layup broke a 60-60 tie and left no time for Lions (4-7) to tie or win the game.

Steven Weidlich led all players with 20 points en route to being named tournament MVP. He also tied for the game-high with 13 rebounds, 10 of which were offensive. Josh Miller finished with 11 points while Dan Weiss had 10. Ryan Traub, who was also named to the All-Tournament Team, finished with six points in the victory.

The team traded buckets for the majority of the first half. Weidlich's layup with 8:15 to play in the period put SU up 17-13 and Hedley's three six minutes later gave the Crusaders a six-point cushion (28-22).

Hoagland's layup with four seconds left in the half gave Susquehanna a 33-26 advantage at the midway point of the contest.

Miller opened the second half with a layup that stretched the Crusaders' lead to nine (35-26) but seven unanswered points by Albright made it a two-point game, 35-33, just 3:36 into the half.

Weidlich's three-pointer with 13:15 on the clock brought the lead back to seven, 47-40, but the Lions scored 11 of the next 15 points to knot the game at 51 with 7:38 remaining.

Albright briefly led 53-51 before Weiss's jumper tied it at 53 just inside the six-minute mark.

From there the lead changed hands with Weidlich's three-point play with 1:27 left putting SU ahead 60-58.

The Lions' Dejaun Smith tied it at 60 with a layup at the eight-second mark before Hoagland countered with what was ultimately the game-winning bucket at the one-second mark.

The Crusaders return home to host Moravian on Jan. 2 at 2 p.m. It is Community Day with no admission charge for the game.
