Box Score SELINSGROVE, Pa. - The Susquehanna women's basketball team never let No. 14 Scranton take a comfortable lead but the Royals were able to fend off a stubborn SU team by a final score of 69-56.
With just 2:29 remaining in the contest, the Crusaders (16-6, 9-4) found themselves down by just six after a three-point play from Nikki Komara (Shamokin, Pa./Lourdes Regional). Unfortunately, Scranton (21-2, 13-1) scored the final seven points to seal the win over SU.
Komara led Susquehanna with 16 points and eight rebounds. Jonaida Williams (Williamsport, Pa./Loyalsock Twp.) and Angie Schedler (Alexandria, Va./T.C. Williams) both chipped in 11 points while Courtney Adams (Hamilton, N.J./Hamilton West) had seven points and five boards, three of which were of the offensive variety.
The Crusaders shot 37.5 percent for the game while Scranton shot at a 40 percent clip. The SU bench, however, outscored the Royals' bench by a 25-6 margin.
Scranton jumped out to a 12-4 lead less than five minutes into the game and held a 12-point advantage (18-8) just inside the 13-minute mark of the half.
An Adams free throw three minutes later trimmed the lead to five, 18-13. Scranton went back up by nine, 26-17, following two Sarah Payonk free throws but Williams' layup with 2:35 remaining made it a 28-24 game.
Megan McFadden (Greenbrook, N.J./Watchung Hills) followed less than 60 seconds later with a trey for a three-point game (30-27) before Scranton's Noelle Alicea sank a three of her own with four ticks on the clock to give the Royals a 36-27 lead at the half.
After just four minutes of play in the second period, Komara's three made it a four-point contest, 42-38. The Royals went ahead by double digits (48-38) on two more Payonk free throws but an 8-2 SU run made the score 50-46 with 8:23 still to play.
The Crusaders got within five on Williams' trey at the 4:29 mark but that was as close as they got to lead for the remainder of the game. Lindsay Fluehr's three with 2:06 on the clock made it a 65-56 game and SU was held without a point for the remaining minutes of the game.
