Box Score TOWSON, Md. – With Wednesday's 51-45 win at Goucher, the Susquehanna women's basketball team officially clinched a spot in the Landmark Conference Tournament.
The playoff berth is the team's first since the 2009-10 season.
The largest lead in the game was a nine-point SU advantage late in the first half but the Crusaders (17-7, 10-5) had just enough on both ends of the court to come away with the win over the Gophers (4-19, 0-15).
Freshman Angie Schedler (Alexandria, Va./T.C. Williams) led all players with 12 points while Jonaida Williams (Williamsport, Pa./Loyalsock Twp.) had 11 to go along with eight rebounds. Nikki Komara (Shamokin, Pa./Lourdes) added eight points and a team-high 10 rebounds.
While Susquehanna shot only 30.6 percent from the floor, the defense held Goucher to a 28 percent showing.
The Gophers led 6-2 four minutes into the game before an Andreana MacIvor (Boiling Springs, Pa./Boiling Springs) layup at the 12:02 mark tied it at six.
SU went on a 13-5 run to lead 19-11 with five minutes to play in the half. Nicole Gault's (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) layup 90 seconds later kept it a nine-point game (22-13) and MacIvor's layup at the 1:19 mark kept the Crusaders ahead by nine (24-15).
While Goucher scored the final two points of the half, Susquehanna still led 24-17 at the midway point of the game.
Komara's trey three minutes into the second period made it 31-22. Four minutes later, Goucher had pulled within four, 32-28, on an Adrienne Flowers layup.
A layup from Williams just inside the seven-minute mark put SU back up by eight (40-32) but Goucher put together a 9-1 stretch to suddenly pull within just one, 42-41, with 3:35 still to play.
Two Sofia Schedler (Alexandria, Va./T.C. Williams) free throws at the 29 second mark of the half upped the Crusaders' lead back to eight (51-43).Trailing by six with five seconds to play, Goucher's last-second shot missed its mark to end the game.
Susquehanna returns home to host Elizabethtown on Saturday, Feb. 21 at 2 p.m. in the final game of the regular season. The team will honor its senior members prior to the start of the game.
