Women's Lacrosse Wins Conference Opener

Box Score

SELINSGROVE, Pa. – A season-high 20 goals propelled the Susquehanna women's lacrosse team to a 20-11 win over Drew in the Landmark Conference opener for both squads.

SU (3-2, 1-0) scored 14 first-half goals but gave up seven to the Rangers (3-1, 0-1) before limiting Drew to a mere four second-half goals.

The Crusader defense forced 21 Drew turnovers and SU had 18 ground balls to the Rangers' seven. Susquehanna also connected on 6-of-8 free position shots.

Kelcie Ehler (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) and Brynn Reid (West Grove, Pa./Avon Grove) each netted four goals while Meredith Crane (Maplewood, N.J./Columbia) added a hat trick to go along with two assists. Teammates Becky McHugh (Royersford, Pa./Archbishop John Carroll) and Annie McElaney (Natick, Mass./Natick) also each added hat tricks.

Goals certainly were not hard to come by in the opening half. Each team had netted five goals apiece just nine minutes into the action with Reid scoring two of those five goals for Susquehanna.

McElaney put the Crusaders ahead 6-5 with a goal at the 19:46 mark and it ended up being the game-winning score as SU never again trailed in the game.

It stood 7-6 in favor of the Crusaders before they rattled off six unanswered goals to make it 13-6 with five minutes to play in the half. Crane scored three of those six goals, including back-to-back goals over a 55-second span.

Reid scored the final goal of the half to give Susquehanna a 14-7 halftime advantage.

The teams traded goals for the first 22 minutes of the second half. Three different Crusaders scored over that span with Ehler's goal at the 9:31 mark making it an 18-11 game.

Reid and Zoe Lycett (Coopersburg, Pa./Southern Lehigh) tacked on insurance goals in the final eight minutes of the game while simultaneously shutting out the Rangers for the 20-11 victory.

The Crusaders conclude their three-game homestand on March 21 with a 5 p.m. game against Widener.
